WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team dropped a 65-54 decision to George Washington University on Sunday afternoon, playing across town at GW's Smith Center. The Hoyas slip to 2-1, while the Colonials improve to 2-2 on the year.
Senior Cynthia Petke (Yaounde, Cameroon/-/Chipola College) led three Hoyas in double figures with 14 points, while junior Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) chipped in 11 and senior Yazmine Belk (Queens, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) provided 10 points. Petke had her third double-double in as many games as she also had a squad-best 16 rebounds. White added eight boards and senior Mikayla Venson (Arlington, Va./Yorktown/Virginia) pulled down four. The Hoyas tallied eight blocks with five credited to Belk. White and senior DiDi Burton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College Prep) both managed four assists apiece.
The game opened up with both teams trading buckets as GU answered the Colonials' opening basket with a 3-pointer to take the 3-2 lead. Back-to-back jumpers from Burton and Petke gave the Hoyas a comfortable lead, 7-2, with 6:37 left in the frame.
George Washington would chip away, clawing their way back into the game, eventually taking the lead on a pair of free throws from Kendall Bresee to make it 10-9.
An athletic move underneath the basket from sophomore Morgan Smith (Upper Marlboro, Md./Riverdale Baptist) resulted in a Hoya field goal and Georgetown regained the lead once again at 11-10.
Both teams would trade buckets through the end of the frame with GW taking a 15-14 advantage.
The Hoyas struggled to find their rhythm in the second quarter with Belk providing the only point production for the Blue & Gray, a basket and a pair of free throws. GW went into the break with a 36-18 lead.
Georgetown finally got a spark back in the offense as Petke nailed a trey to start a 10-0 Hoya run behind a layup and 3-pointer apiece from Petke and White, forcing a GW timeout with 3:57 remaining in the third quarter.
The back-and-forth affair would continue as the Hoyas could not get any closer than 13 points, but a last second 3-pointer from Venson closed the stanza with GU pulling within 12 points, 48-36.
The Blue & Gray opened the scoring in the fourth quarter on a White bucket. A trey from Petke cut the deficit to single digits at 50-41, but the Hoyas would not get any closer as the Colonials continued to pull away as the game waned on.
The game slowed down in the closing minutes and a pair of free throws from Venson ended the game with the Colonials taking the 65-54 win.
Georgetown was limited to 34.5 percent shooting for the game while GW shot 40.7%. The Hoyas outrebounded the Colonials, 38-36, but GW held the edge in turnovers, forcing 17 GU turnovers while the Colonials only committed 13. The Georgetown defense managed eight blocks. The GW bench was deep, providing 21 points for the Colonials.
The Hoyas return to action this week as they compete in the Challenge in Music City, held Nov. 24-26 in Nashville, Tenn. The Blue & Gray will play Auburn, Chattanooga and Northwestern over the three-day tournament with the Tigers up first on Nov. 24 with an 8:30 p.m. ET tipoff.
