WASHINGTON - The top-seeded Georgetown University women's soccer team (13-3-3) used a dominating 4-0 victory over the fourth-seeded Marquette University Golden Eagles (13-7-1) on Thursday at Shaw Field to advance to the BIG EAST Championship. Leading the way was senior midfielder Rachel Corboz (Green Brook, N.J./Pingry) with two goals and an assist in the victory.
"It was a fantastic effort today, we had attacking drive, attitude to defending and a commitment to passion to go and win a game instead of waiting for the game to be won," said Georgetown Head Coach Dave Nolan. "I thought we had that today from the first whistle we were right into them, we were trying to make things happen. I was very proud of the kids today."
The Hoyas came out fired up with a number of early chances including a free kick from Corboz that sailed inches over the crossbar. In the 10th minute, sophomore defender Meaghan Nally (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) dribbled up the right side and far into the box. As she danced around defenders, she passed back to junior forward Caitlin Farrell (Wallingford, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) who fired past Marquette keeper Maddy Henry to make it 1-0.
Just four minutes later, Corboz was awarded a second free kick at top of the box and this time she didn't miss to put the Hoyas ahead, 2-0.
The Blue & Gray would continue to push throughout the half. Georgetown senior keeper Arielle Schechtman (Del Mar, Calif./La Jolla Country Day/UCLA) was tested just once and came up with the save to make it 2-0 at the break.
The Hoyas picked up right where they left off in the second half pushing forward. In the 50th minute, a Corboz corner kick seemed to bounce over everyone to the far post. As the ball went past, a charging Kelly Ann Livingstone (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge) managed to get a head on it and send it into the open net for the 3-0 lead.
The final goal of the afternoon came on a Corboz free kick just outside the box as she sent it to the far post and it sailed just over her targets and into the net to make it 4-0 in the 64th minute which would stand as the final.
Georgetown outshot Marquette, 21-3, and took eight corner kicks to the Golden Eagles' three. Schechtman was awarded the win in the net with two saves, while Henry took the loss with four saves on the afternoon.
This is Georgetown's second-consecutive trip to the BIG EAST Championship game. The squad had already won the regular season. Last year, the Hoyas downed Marquette to win the program's first-ever BIG EAST Championship.
Sunday's championship game will be broadcast live on FS1 with Bernie Guenther and Monika Moore calling the action. Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com. The Hoyas will play the winner of second-seeded Butler and third-seeded Providence in the contest.
