WASHINGTON - The Georgetown men's basketball team returns to action on Saturday afternoon when it hosts its longtime rival, the Syracuse Orange. Tipoff at Capital One Arena is set for 12:30 p.m. The game will be shown live on CBS with Spero Dedes calling the play-by-play and Clark Kellogg providing color analysis. The game can be heard locally on 106.7 WFJK-FM with Rich Chvotkin handling the call.
GU (8-0) remained undefeated with an 83-74 win against the visiting North Carolina A&T Aggies last Saturday. Junior center Jessie Govan (Queens Village, N.Y./Wings Academy) recorded his sixth double-double of the season as he led the team with 22 points and 15 rebounds. He was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the fourth time this season.
Govan led a trio of Hoyas in double figures as freshman Jamorko Pickett (Washington, D.C./Massanutten Military Academy [Va.]) chipped in 12 while junior Kaleb Johnson (South Hill, Va./The Carlisle School) added 10 as well as grabbing five rebounds and blocking three shots. Junior Marcus Derrickson (Bowie, Md./Brewster Academy [N.H.]) chimed in with nine boards to go with eight points, two blocks and one steal. Senior Jonathan Mulmore (New Orleans, La./Redemption Christian [Texas]/Allegany) and graduate student Trey Dickerson (Queens, N.Y./God's Academy [Texas]/South Dakota) paced the offense with five and four assists, respectively.
The Hoyas currently lead the BIG EAST in rebounds, averaging 41.4 per game, and Govan leads the league in the same category with 13.0 rpg. Georgetown also leads the league in assists per game (18.8), and is second in field goal percentage defense (.382). Johnson (.660) and Govan (.630) are among the top five in the league for field goal percentage, while Johnson leads the league in 3-point field goal percentage (.550). Derrickson comes in second in the BIG EAST in the free throw percentage category (.931).Syracuse enters Saturday's game with an 8-1 record, coming off a recent win against Colgate, 72-58. The team's lone loss came against then-No. 2 Kansas on December 2, 76-60. Sophomore Tyus Battle leads the Orance with an average of 20.7 ppg, including 24 points in their most recent win against Colgate.
Saturday's game will be the 93rd meeting between the two former BIG EAST rivals. GU has a 43-49 record against Syracuse, but has won the past two meetings including a 78-71 victory in last year's meeting.
Following Saturday's game, the Hoyas will return to action against North Texas on Wednesday, December 20, with a 7 p.m. tipoff time at Capital One Arena.
