SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Georgetown University women's basketball team used a big third quarter to seal a 77-60 victory over the Seton Hall University Pirates (11-14, 4-10 BIG EAST) on Friday evening at Walsh Gymnasium. With the victory, the Hoyas improved to 15-8 overall and 7-6 in BIG EAST Conference play.
"Another great team win, it's always good when you can go deep into your bench and show versatility," said Georgetown Head Coach Natasha Adair. "We challenged them defensively, and we really stepped up. I can't say enough about Cynthia Petke, Faith Woodard and Dorothy Admako. They were denying Dionna (White), and the beauty of this team is that other people stepped up."
Three Hoyas scored in double figures as senior forward Faith Woodard (Brandon, Fla./Freedom) led the way with 19 points as well as eight rebounds. Junior guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) managed 18 points, while junior forward Cynthia Petke (Yaounde, Cameroon/-/Chipola College) added a career-best 17 points and a squad-high nine rebounds.
The Hoyas outrebounded the Pirates, 52-34, and shot 40.3 percent (29-of-72) from the field, while the defense allowed Seton Hall just 36.7 percent (18-of-49) shooting. Georgetown forced 16 Pirate turnovers on eight steals, and held a 16-12 advantage in assists.
"I'm proud of our rebounding and us honing into the plan," said Adair. "We want to be playing our best basketball heading into March, and today shows what kind of team we can be. I'm very proud of this team win."
It was Petke getting it done early as she scored six of GU's first eight points and the Hoyas jumped out to a 12-6 lead midway through the first. The junior continued to make noise tying her career best of 11 points in just the first quarter while also pulling down three boards, grabbing a steal and taking a charge.
The Hoyas managed to hold onto a lead, but a Pirate trey at the buzzer made it 20-17 at the end of the first.
The second quarter saw the scoring spread out as five different Hoyas got into the action early to maintain the three-possession lead. The Blue & Gray was strong down low with four second-chance points early in the stanza. Following the media timeout, a 3-pointer from senior guard Tyshell King (Baltimore, Md./St. Frances Academy) made it 34-24 giving GU its largest lead of the game to that point.
In the final two minutes, the pace picked up and the Hoyas took advantage with back-to-back layups from Woodard as the defense went to work. Woodard scored Georgetown's final seven points of the half as the Blue & Gray went into the locker room leading, 41-30.
Woodard picked right where she left off in the third quarter as GU opened with a 6-0 run, and the senior had four of the points to make it 47-30. It proved to be a huge third quarter for the Hoyas who outscored Seton Hall 20-6 over the first six minutes of the stanza to make it 61-36. The run included back-to-back treys from Adomako and sophomore guard Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill).
In all, it was a 28-12 run over the span of the third quarter, and the defense allowed just two Pirate field goals to lead, 69-42, at the end of the period.
Over the final quarter, the Hoyas were able to hold on to a significant lead and never allowed Seton Hall back in the game as the squad cruised to the 77-60 victory.
The Hoyas will continue the road swing on Sunday at St. John's University for a 2 p.m. matchup at Carnesecca Arena. The game will air live on the BIG EAST Digital Network and live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
