WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team opened the 2017 season on Friday at the Felsburg Invitational, losing a pair of games on the day. The Hoyas dropped a tight 2-1 game against Memphis in the opener and then 4-0 fell to host Florida International in the nightcap.

Sophomore Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) led the way registering four hits combined in both games. Freshman Noelle Holiday (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) had the lone RBI coming in game one.

Game 1 Freshman Anna Brooks Pacha (Houston, Texas/St John's School) was in the circle for the Hoyas against Memphis. She went 6.2 innings and struck out seven, allowing two runs on seven hits taking the loss. The Tigers produced their only two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

The Blue & Gray were retired in order in the top of the first. Georgetown loaded the bases in the second with a walk by Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md./Northern) and singles by Gabriela Elvina (Edison, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) and by freshman Sera Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Marian). However, the inning ended with a strikeout and flyout by the next two batters.

GU broke into the scoring column in the top of the third inning. Junior Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) led off the inning with single and proceeded to steal second. Holiday then cracked a double into left-center field to drive in the run.

Georgetown would get runners on base during each of the next four innings but could not push a run across. Senior Hannah Ramsey (Buda, Texas/Jack C. Hays), Belknap, and freshman Ciara Sullivan (Middletown, N.J./Middletown) had hits during this time.

Game 2 Freshman Katie Vannicola (Vienna, Va./James Madison) got the nod on the rubber, going six innings with two earned runs and struck out two batters. Vannicola fell to 0-1 on the year.

Georgetown had two singles by Belknap and a single from Ramsey.

The Hoyas return to the diamond tomorrow for a rematch against Memphis at 1:30 p.m. and against FIU at 6:30 p.m. For live stats go to www.GUHoyas.com.
