WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team defeated Brown on Sunday, 5-3. The Hoyas improved to 3-11 on the season after the win. This game was the final game of the East Madeira Invite, hosted by Eastern Michigan.
Anna Brooks Pacha (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) started in the circle for GU, going five innings and gave up no runs while limiting the Bears to three hits. Pacha struck out five batters on the way to picking up her third win on the season. Katie Vannicola (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS) came on in relief to pitch the final two innings and gave up three runs on four hits while striking out three.
The Hoyas led from the beginning after plating four runs in the top of the first inning. Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md./Northern) then reached on an error to load the bases. Noelle Holiday (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) opened the scoring by drawing a walk to score Belknap. Gabriela Elvina (Edison, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) followed that up with an RBI groundout to plate Kane. Sera Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Marian) then picked up an RBI single to score Bennett and the scoring in the inning concluded when Alessandra Gargicevich-Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) hit a sacrifice fly to score Holiday.
The scoring was finished in the second inning when Belknap opened up the inning with a double and would score on Elvina's first of three hits in the game.
Brown was shut down for the first six innings, before scoring three runs in the seventh inning. However, Vannicola shut the door to end the game limiting the Bears to those three runs.
The Hoyas return to the field on Friday, March 3 when they travel to College Station, Texas for the Texas A&M Invite.
