WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball squad fell, 67-59, to the Creighton University Bluejays (17-6, 11-2 BIG EAST) Sunday afternoon at McDonough Arena. The loss snapped a five-game win streak for the Hoyas and dropped the squad to 14-8 overall as well as 6-6 in BIG EAST Conference play.
"I thought we made a good run at the end of the second quarter going into the half, but then we came out in the third and they made a big run which put us behind," said Georgetown Associate Head Coach James Howard. "This will be a big preparation week, we'll prepare for Seton Hall and St. John's and look to get back on the winning track up there next weekend."
Four Hoyas scored in double figures as junior guard Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) led the way with 19 points and three steals. Sophomore guard Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) posted 16 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double, while junior forward Cynthia Petke (Yaounde, Cameroon/-/Chipola College) managed 11 points and seven boards and junior guard DiDi Burton (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College) added 10 points.
The Hoyas were outrebounded, 38-32, but forced 18 Creighton turnovers on 11 steals. Georgetown shot 37.9 percent (22-for-58) from the field, but allowed the Bluejays 48.2 percent (27-of-56) shooting in the contest.
The Hoyas jumped out to a 9-4 lead as the squad looked inside to generate buckets and came up with stops on the other end. The Bluejays did what they do best and hit from long range to cut it back to a one-possession game as GU clung to a small lead.
In the final two minutes, a three-point play gave Creighton the 17-15 lead, but a pair of White free throws tied it right back up. GU couldn't get ahead, however, trailing by two, 21-19, at the end of the first quarter.
The squads battled through the beginning of the second quarter as Georgetown clawed its way back into the game. Georgetown fought but couldn't regain the lead as the Bluejays went ahead by as much as five, 30-25.
Creighton continued to build the lead as the first half came to a close going into the break with a 37-29 advantage.
The Bluejays opened the second half with a 4-0 run to take their largest lead of the game at 41-29. A Burton jumper brought it back to 10, but a Creighton 3-pointer resulted in a Hoya timeout as GU looked to regroup.
Adomako hit a shot out of the timeout, but Creighton continued to answer as the Bluejays pulled away, 49-33. Despite the deficit, the Hoyas still had a push as senior guard Mykia Jones (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook/Wake Forest) nailed a 3-pointer and Petke added a turn around jumper and a trey at the buzzer for an 8-0 run cutting the lead to eight.
As Georgetown battled, Creighton would answer with treys making the Bluejay lead 57-44 at the end of the third quarter.
In the final stanza, four-consecutive free throws from Adomako cut the lead to nine with 3:06 remaining. However, Creighton put together a quick 4-0 run on a 3-pointer and a free throw to keep the contest out of reach for the Blue & Gray.
Georgetown's comeback was too little, too late in the closing minute as the squad fell, 67-59.
