Georgetown Competes at GW Invite and Knecht Cup

April 11, 2017

WASHINGTON - Georgetown University's women's rowing team were a split squad this weekend for the GW Invite on the Potomac River and the Knecht Cup in Mercer, N.J. Conditions were very windy throughout the weekend, with both races having to condense their formats to accommodate the race schedule. Friday proved to be unrowable on the Potomac and Saturday was unrowable in Mercer, leaving a single day for both the lightweights and openweights for a pair of races.

Openweights
The openweights had strong races throughout Saturday's events, with swift currents and fast times in all three lanes of racing that were aided by tailwind as well.

"After the morning races, I could see that we were not getting enough grip on the water in the current, so we made adjustments to the rigging in the 1V and 2V," said Head Coach Stephen Full. "Had we another opportunity in the 4+, I think the margins would have been much closer."

After the rigging changes, the 1V and 2V posted strong finishes against Patriot League favorite, Navy. The 2V finished within a second of Navy, posting the closest finish with them in the last 10 years. The top 8+ was victorious in their win against Navy, eking out a near photo finish by .08 seconds to give the Hoyas their first win against Navy in more than 10 years.

The 2V4+ posted the lone win for the Blue & Gray with a 15-second victory over host GW.

"This was a good day for us," said Full.

Assistant Coach Carolyn Glandorf added, "All boats rowed their rhythm and attacked the course but there is still work left to do".

Lightweights
The lightweight 8+ and 4+ boats had tough races in the Knecht Cup. The 4+ boat put together a strong performance in its heat to earn a spot in the Grand Final. Having exhausted their efforts in the heat, they did not post a great time in the final but were in the hunt through the 1,000-meter mark.

Assistant coach Kieren Emery was very impressed with their gutsy effort in their heat, but stated they just "ran out of gas" in the final.

The 8+ boat had a great start but fell short in the second 500 to give themselves a chance against top-ranked Stanford and Princeton. Both crews moved out and the Hoyas were put in a tough spot of not qualifying for the Grand Final.

"They certainly learned a lot," said Emery. "We will adjust for this weekend against Princeton in the Class of 2006 Cup Race."
