Hoyas Drop Two Against Villanova

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team dropped a pair of games on Friday against Villanova. The Hoyas fell to 11-25 overall and 4-7 in BIG EAST Conference play while Villanova improved to 23-13 overall and 6-5 in league play.

Game 1: Villanova 10, Georgetown 2

Anna Brooks Pacha (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) started in the circle for GU. She went 4.2 innings and gave up seven runs on four hits while striking out five. Katie Vannicola (Vienna, Va./James Madison) came on in relief to pitch the final 2.1 innings and allowed three runs on four hits.

The Blue & Gray took an early lead by picking up a run in the second inning. Noelle Holiday (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) led off the inning with a single. Gabriela Elvina (Edison, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) then singled to advance pinch runner Olivia Russ (Huntington Beach, Calif./Ocean View) to second. Sera Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Marian) would pick up an RBI on the next play with a single into center to score Russ.

The Wildcats exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning as well as two runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh to pick up the win.

The final scoring from Georgetown came in the sixth inning. Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) delivered a one-out single to get things started. After a fly-out, Noelle Holiday smashed a double into left field to score Kane all the way from first.

Holiday finished the game with three hits and Stevens added two hits.

Game 2: Villanova 8, Georgetown 6

Casey Kozak (Marlton, N.J./Bishop Eustace) started on the rubber for GU and went two innings while allowing five runs on six hits. Vannicola came on in relief for the second time in the day. She went the final five innings and gave up three runs on seven hits.

Villanova got out to a quick start by taking a 7-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third. Georgetown would respond with a four-spot in the third inning. After a fly-out to start the inning, three-straight singles by Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep), Kane and Elvina loaded the bases for Holiday. Holiday reached on a fielder's choice to score Belknap and a throwing error by the shortstop brought home Kane as well. Hannah Ramsey capped off the inning with her fourth home run of the year to pull the score to 7-4.

The Wildcats added a run in the top of the sixth to make the score 8-4, but the Hoyas responded with two runs. Stevens lead off the sixth with a single into right field and advanced to second on Alessandra Gargicevich-Almeida's (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) walk. Delaney Osterday (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc) then singled to load the bases for Delaney Darden (Tustin, Calif./Beckman). Darden responded with a single up the middle to plate two runs and move the score to 8-6. However, the threat was ended with two groundouts and strikeout.
