May 15, 2017 WASHINGTON - Just two days after capturing a quartet of titles at the 2017 BIG EAST Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the Georgetown University track & field team celebrated its graduating seniors and handed out team awards from the preceding three seasons at its annual banquet.
As is always the case, the GU track & field season extends weeks beyond the academic year and when the annual banquet is held. Following remarks from teammates on the graduating seniors, the coaching staff awarded the MVPs from the 2016 outdoor track & field, 2016 cross country and 2017 indoor track & field seasons.
The 2016 outdoor track MVPs went to Darren Fahy (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) and Emma Keenan (Gwynedd Valley, Pa./Gwynedd-Mercy Academy). Fahy had an outstanding 2016 outdoor season that saw the All-American finish fifth overall in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase at the NCAA outdoor meet. Fahy clocked 8:36.24 in the steeple, a time that ranks third all-time in Georgetown history. Keenan ran a personal record (PR) 2:03.33 in the women's 800-meter run during the 2016 outdoor season, a time that ranks fifth all-time in program history. The All-American was part of the 2016 Penn Relays championship 4x800-meter foursome. She closed the season as a semifinalist in the women's 800-meter run, competing at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
Scott Carpenter (Lenox, Mass./Lenox Memorial) and Paige Hofstad (New Braunfels, Texas/New Braunfels) were named the 2016 cross country MVPs. Carpenter was named an All-American after the cross country season as he earned All-BIG EAST First Team honors and finished 10th overall at the NCAA championships. It was the second-consecutive year the Hoyas had put a competitor among the top 10 in the individual race and Carpenter's first All-America honor in cross country. Hofstad was a consistent presence for the Hoyas throughout the cross country season, the first for the freshman. She was the top GU finisher as she impressively finished 15th at the 2017 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional.
All-Americans Kennedy Weisner (St. Marys, Pa./Elk County Catholic) and Joe White (Clifton, N.J./DePaul Catholic) were named the 2017 indoor track & field MVPs. Weisner qualified for the women's indoor championships for the first time in her career, running a 4:37.92 mile, which ranks eighth all-time in Georgetown history. White ran to a pair of school records, first in the 800-meter run (1:46.44) and then the 800-meter relay carry (1:45.8) that bolstered the Hoyas to an NCAA-qualifying performance. He went on to finish third in the 800-meter finals at the NCAA championships.
The coaching staff introduced the Coaches Award, a new addition to the annual MVP honors. It is awarded to a member of the team who embodies leadership, hard work, perseverance and who inspires teammates to rise above and beyond to represent the Georgetown track & field / cross country program with great honor and pride. The 2016-17 recipients were Kenneth Armstrong (San Dimas, Calif./Damien) and Jody-Ann Knight (Bentonville, Ark./Bentonville). Armstrong's hard work through his four-year career culminated in a PR performance in the final meet of his career as he jumped 6.90m in the men's long jump to score points for the Blue & Gray at the 2017 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships. Knight's inspiring BIG EAST indoor championships performance saw the junior toe the line four times and come away with a quartet of PRs, an impressive if not unprecedented feat.
The Blue & Gray honored the graduating seniors:
Daniel Anderson, Kenneth Armstrong, Michael Clevenger, Darren Fahy, Nathaniel Gordon, Connor Sheryak
Carey Celata, Sarah Cotton, Jocelyn Hubbard, Emma Keenan, Ebony McKeever, Haley Pierce, Sabrina Southerland
