Hoyas Fall in Game One to Butler

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team was defeated by Butler on Saturday by a score of 9-7. With the loss, the Hoyas fell to 11-35 and 4-15 in BIG EAST Conference play, while the Bulldogs improved to 21-28 and 9-9 in league play.

Anna Brooks Pacha (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) started in the circle for GU. She went one inning and gave up nine runs on five hits. Katie Vannicola (Vienna, Va./James Madison) came on in relief to pitch the final five innings and scattered four hits while not surrendering a run.

The Bulldogs used a three-run first inning and a big six-run second inning to earn the victory.

The Blue & Gray got on the board in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) led off the game with a single up the middle and advanced to second when Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) reached on an error. Noelle Holiday (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) picked up an RBI with a single into left field to plate Belknap from third. After Butler took a 3-1 lead, the Hoyas bounced back with two more runs in the second. Alessandra Gargicevich-Almeida (Riverside, Calif./Martin Luther King) led off the inning with a single into center field. Delaney Osterday (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc) then stepped up and launched her first career home run to tie the game at 3-3.

The final scoring opportunity came in the seventh inning. The Hoyas led off the inning with three-straight singles. Belknap and Kane delivered the first two singles to start the rally. Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md./Northern) then picked up an RBI with a single of her own to score Belknap. The next run came when Sera Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Marian) had an RBI ground out to score Kane. The third run of the inning came off the bat of Hannah Ramsey (Buda, Texas/ Jack C. Hays) with an RBI single. The last scoring play of the inning came when Osterday singled up the middle to plate Ramsey.
