WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team dropped a pair of games to Butler on Sunday on the final day of the regular season. With the losses, the Hoyas finish the season at 11-37 and 4-16 in BIG EAST Conference play, while the Bulldogs improved to 23-28 and 11-9 in league play and have clinched the fourth-seed in the upcoming BIG EAST tournament. The Hoyas fell in game one by a score of 4-0, while game two ended 7-6. Game 1: Butler 4, Georgetown 0
Katie Vannicola (Vienna, Va./James Madison) started in the circle for GU. She went five innings and gave up four runs on five hits. Casey Kozak (Marlton, N.J./Bishop Eustace) came on in relief to pitch a scoreless final inning. The Bulldogs used a two-run first inning and a two-run fifth inning to earn the victory. ' The Hoyas had two strong scoring opportunities. In the first inning Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) led off the game with a single up the middle and advanced to second when Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced on a double steal with two outs, however the inning ended on a groundout.
The final scoring opportunity came in the third inning. Kane delivered a one-out single up the middle and stole second on the next play. With two outs, Noelle Holiday (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) walked to put two runners on, however the inning ended with a strikeout.
Game 2: Butler 7, Georgetown 6
Anna Brooks Pacha (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) started on the rubber for the Hoyas and gave up six runs on three hits while striking out four. Vannicola made her second appearance of the day in relief to pitch the final three innings while giving up one run on one hit.
The Blue & Gray scored in five of seven innings and outhit the Bulldogs 9-4 but a three-run fourth inning for Butler proved to be the difference.
After Butler scored in the first inning, the Hoyas bounced back with a run in the second inning. This came off the bat of Holiday who launched a solo home run to center field.
In the third inning, GU had its only multi-run inning. Delaney Darden (Tustin, Calif./Beckman) singled into right field with one out and advanced to second on Kane's single up the middle. Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md./Northern) then drilled a double down the left field line to score both runners and take a 3-2 lead.
Gabriela Elvina (Edison, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) walked to lead off the fourth inning and advanced to second when Hannah Ramsey (Buda, Texas/ Jack C. Hays) reached on an error. After two-consecutive outs, Darden sent a single into right field to score Elvina and tie the game at 4-4. The Bulldogs added three runs in the bottom of the fourth, but the Hoya bounced back with a run in the top of the fifth. Holiday singled into center with two outs and was replaced by pinch runner Alexa Dolby (Round Hill, Va./Woodgrove). Dolby stole second and scored when Elvina reached on a fielding error to pull within two runs at 7-5.
The final run came in the sixth inning, when Delaney Osterday (Oconomowoc, Wis./Oconomowoc) blasted her second home run of the series to put the final score at 7-6.
