Aug. 21, 2017 WASHINGTON - Georgetown University's women's soccer team earned a pair of BIG EAST weekly honors following the opening weekend of action for the 2017 season. Junior Amanda Carolan (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) and senior Elizabeth Wenger (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) were named the BIG EAST Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, while senior goalkeeper Arielle Schechtman (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla Country Day/UCLA) was selected to the weekly honor roll.
The fifth-ranked Hoyas went 1-1-0 to kick off the 2017 campaign. Georgetown dropped a tough 1-0 decision to top-ranked West Virginia on Friday before rebounding with a decisive 4-0 victory over George Washington on Sunday.
Carolan guided the offense in GU's weekend, highlighted by Sunday's 4-0 win over the Colonials. Against GW, she was one of three players to record a goal and an assist, including the set up on the game-winning goal in the 49th minute before providing an insurance goal in the final minutes. She was also credited with a shot in Friday's narrow 1-0 setback to the No. 1 Mountaineers.
Wenger anchored a defense which surrendered just one goal over the weekend as the Hoyas outshot their opponents by a 33-12 margin over two games. The lone goal allowed was against WVU on Friday, which Georgetown outshot 13-7. Sunday against GW, the Hoyas outshot the Colonials 20-5 and didn't allow a single shot attempt in the final 57:25 of the game.
Schechtman earned her first shutout of the season in Georgetown's 4-0 victory over GW. She posted an .857 save percentage and allowed a lone goal to the top-ranked Mountaineers. She totaled six saves on the weekend, three in each game. Georgetown returns to action on Thursday, August 24, as it hits the road for the first time this season at Delaware. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Newark, Del.
