Sept. 16, 2017 WASHINGTON - The No. 18-ranked Georgetown University women's soccer team is back in action on Sunday, Sept. 17, visiting Towson. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. and live video and stats can be seen through the Georgetown Athletics website, www.GuHoyas.com.
Georgetown, ranked No. 18 in the country by the United Soccer Coaches, enters the game with a 5-2-1 record following a scoreless draw with No. 13 Rutgers last Sunday. The Hoyas, who beat St. Francis (Pa.), 5-0, last Friday, are 5-1-1 in the last seven games.
Senior midfielder Rachel Corboz (Green Brook, N.J./Pingry) leads the Hoyas in scoring with 12 points, coming off of four goals and four assists. The preseason BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year and a MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List selection, Corboz is ted for the conference lead in points and assists and is tied for second in the league in goals.
Corboz is tied for the team lead in goals scored with junior forward Caitlin Farrell (Wallingford, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall), who has four goals, including a pair in the team's 5-0 win over Loyola (Md.) on Aug. 27.
Eight different players have scored goals and 11 different players have scored at least one point for Georgetown, who ranks No. 20 in the country in total points (54), averaging 6.8 per game. GU is tied for No. 21 in the country in assists (18).
Sophomore midfielder Carson Nizialek (Chantilly, Va./Freedom) is third on the team in scoring with eight points (3 goals, 2 assists), while sophomore midfielder Paula Germino-Watnick (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) and sophomore forward Casey Richards (Allendale, N.J./Northern Highlands) (1 goal, 3 assists) are tied for fourth with five points. Freshman forward Jenna Menta (Lincolndale, N.J./Somers Senior) and senior midfielder Chloe Knott (Auckland, New Zealand/Rangitoto College HS) each have one goal and two assists for four points.
The Hoyas also rank No. 10 in the country with six shutouts. Senior goalkeeper Arielle Schechtman (Del Mar, Calif./La Jolla Country Day/UCLA), who was selected to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll last Monday, carries a 0.58 goals-against average.
Senior Jenna Staudt (Bingham Farms, Mich./Detroit Country Day) was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week earlier this week after helping the backline to a pair of shutouts last weekend. The Hoyas limited St. Francis (Pa.) to only one shot in a 5-0 win last Friday. In the draw with Rutgers on Sunday, Staudt, playing center back, helped the Hoyas limit Rutgers to only four shots and keep the Scarlet Knights, who were averaging three goals a game, scoreless for the first time all season.
This will be the 11th all-time meeting between Georgetown and Towson, with the Hoyas leading the head-to-head series, 8-2-0. Georgetown has won the last five meetings by a combined score of 21-1 and has a 2-1-0 record in games played in Baltimore. In a 6-0 win last year at home, Corboz scored three goals, while Germino-Watnick and Richards each scored one.
