Georgetown 3, San Jose Sate 0
WASHINGTON - No. 10 Georgetown scored a pair of goals in the first half and added one more in the second half to cruise to a 3-0 win over San Jose State in a women's soccer match on Sunday afternoon in northern California.
Georgetown, winners of three of its last four games, improves to 4-2 overall, while the Spartans fall to 1-4-0.
The teams played the game with temperatures in the 90s and high humidity. San Jose State was playing its first game in a week as a match against Rice in Houston had been canceled due to Hurricane Harvey.
"This was a very gritty performance by the team in tough circumstances," Head Coach Dave Nolan said. "San Jose State did not play Friday and they were well-rested. The heat was oppressive and their direct style meant it would be a physical contest. We started really well and dominated the first half, getting two great goals from Meaghan (Nally) and Carson (Nizialek).
"They really challenged us in the second half, but our defending was very strong and Caitlin (Farrell) added a third goal for us to kill the game."
The Hoyas wasted little time getting on the board, with a corner kick from senior midfielder Rachel Corboz (Green Brook, N.J./Pingry) getting things started. Corboz played a short ball from the corner to senior midfielder Chloe Knott (Auckland, New Zealand/Rangitoto College HS) outside of the box. Knott sent the ball to sophomore Meaghan Nally (Herndon, Va./South Lakes), who took a shot from the right corner of the 18 and gave GU a lead at 6:17.
GU had another chance in the 31st minute when a free kick from Corboz on the near side of the field from 30 yards out hit the crossbar.
The lead doubled in the 42nd minute when sophomore Carson Nizialek (Chantilly, Va./Freedom) scored to the top left corner from 30 yards out after a feed from freshman forward Jenna Menta (Lincolndale, N.Y./Somers Senior).
After a shot from Corboz early in the second half went wide, San Jose State countered and earned a corner kick, which resulted in a shot by Dorthe Hoppius that was saved by senior goalkeeper Arielle Schechtman (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla Country Day/UCLA) in the 48th minute.
The Spartans had two more shots in the second half that went wide, but the Hoyas countered in the 75th minute and sealed the win. Junior forward Caitlin Farrell (Wallingford, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) raced up the near sideline and took a shot that hit off the post and bounced in at 74:37, pushing GU's lead to 3-0.
The Hoyas finished with an 11-5 advantage in shots and managed six corner kicks, while San Jose State took two. Schechtman, who posted her fourth shutout of the season, made two saves.
