Hoyas Head Out on the Road This Weekend

Jan. 11, 2018

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team will continue BIG EAST Conference play on Friday evening matching up against the St. John's University Red Storm at 7 p.m. at Carnesecca Arena. On Sunday, the Hoyas will travel to South Orange, New Jersey for a 1 p.m. contest against Seton Hall University. Both games will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network.

Georgetown made a spirited comeback down the stretch, but fell to the Villanova University Wildcats, 60-58, in a BIG EAST matchup on Wednesday evening at McDonough Arena. With the loss the Hoyas dropped to 7-8 overall and 2-3 in league play.

Junior guard Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) led the way with 19 points and five rebounds. She was followed by freshman forward Tatiana Thompson (Winter Haven, Fla./Winter Haven) who tallied 13 points. Senior forward Cynthia Petke (Yaounde, Cameroon/-/Chipola College) led the squad with 13 rebounds and added five steals

The Hoyas were outrebounded, 35-34, and forced Villanova into 13 turnovers while committing just seven. The Wildcats were leading the nation in turnovers averaging just 8.9 per game prior to the contest. Georgetown shot 40.0 percent (24-of-60) from the field, but allowed 43.4 percent (23-of-53) shooting, including nine 3-pointers, from 'Nova.

Georgetown has three Hoyas averaging in double figures. White is averaging 17.9 ppg, ranking third in the BIG EAST, to go along with 6.5 rpg and a league-high 34 steals. Senior guard Mikayla Venson (Arlington, Va./Yorktown/Virginia) is second on the squad with 13.6 ppg as well as 2.7 rpg. Petke is averaging 10.9 ppg and 10.0 rpg, which ranks third in the league on the boards. She is one of only three players in the conference to be averaging a double-double. Senior center Yazmine Belk (Queens, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) is leading the conference in blocks with 1.9 bpg.

The Hoyas are second in the league in scoring defense allowing just 58.5 ppg, as well as second in offensive rebounds with 13.6 rpg. Georgetown is third in turnover margin holding a +5.27 advantage and also third in rebounding margin, outrebounding opponents by 0.3 rpg.

Following a trio of wins against Creighton, Xavier and Butler, the Red Storm (10-7, 3-3 BIG EAST) will look to maintain its momentum. The Johnnies enter the contest on the heels of their most dominant conference win of the season in a 73-55 victory over Butler on Thursday at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Red Storm was led by Alisha Kebbe's first career double-double, as the sophomore scored a team-high 14 points while grabbing 11 rebounds. The guard also dished out four assists and recorded three steals.

Georgetown is 28-32 all-time against the Red Storm and 11-17 on the road. Last year in Queens, the Hoya comeback came up short as the squad fell, 65-54. Three Hoyas scored in double figures as Dorothy Adomako (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) led the way with 21 points as well as five rebounds. Faith Woodard managed 14 points and seven boards, while Petke added 10 points and seven rebounds.

The Pirates (10-7, 2-4 BIG EAST) used a tenacious defensive effort to notch a 62-51 win at Xavier on Wednesday night at the Cintas Center. The Pirates forced 25 turnovers in the win and totaled 16 steals. Donnaizha Fountain led The Hall on the offensive end in the win with 17 points and tied for the game-high with seven rebounds. Fountain was one of three Pirates in double figures, joined by Taylor Brown and JaQuan Jackson who each scored 10.

GU is 27-35 all-time against the Pirates and 9-17 on the road. Last year, Georgetown won, 77-60, in South Orange as the Hoyas won both meetings during the regular season. Three Hoyas scored in double figures as Woodard led the way with 19 points as well as eight rebounds. Adomako managed 18 points, while Petke added a career-best 17 points and a squad-high nine rebounds.
