WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team (7-10, 2-5 BIG EAST) will continue BIG EAST Conference play on Friday evening, matching up against the Marquette University Golden Eagle at 7 p.m. at McDonough Arena. The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN). On Sunday, the Hoyas will host a 2 p.m. contest against DePaul University. Sunday will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network.
A fourth-quarter comeback was not enough as the Hoyas lost to the Seton Hall University Pirates, 70-65, in a BIG EAST Conference matchup on Sunday afternoon at Walsh Gymnasium. Senior guard
Mikayla Venson (Arlington, Va./Yorktown/Virginia) led the way with a career-best 28 points. Junior guard
Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) added 13 points and two steals. Senior forward
Cynthia Petke (Yaounde, Cameroon/-/Chipola College) managed 12 points and a squad-best nine rebounds in the contest.
The Hoyas were outrebounded, 39-32, but forced Seton Hall into 21 turnovers while committing just 13. Georgetown shot 36.1 percent (22-of-61) from the field, and allowed 47.1 percent (24-of-51) shooting, including six 3-pointers, from the Pirates.
Georgetown has three Hoyas averaging in double figures. White is averaging 17.5 ppg, ranking fourth in the BIG EAST, to go along with 6.3 rpg and a league-high 45 steals. Venson is second on the squad with 14.4 ppg, ranking 10th in the league, as well as 2.6 rpg. Petke is averaging 10.6 ppg and 9.5 rpg, which ranks third in the league on the boards. Senior center Yazmine Belk (Queens, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) is leading the conference in blocks with 1.8 bpg.
The Hoyas are second in the league in scoring defense allowing just 59.5 ppg, as well as second in offensive rebounds with 13.5 rpg. Georgetown is third in turnover margin holding a +5.29 advantage and also third in rebounding margin.
Marquette's Allazia Blockton was named BIG EAST Player of the Week for the second time this season on Monday as the junior averaged 20.7 points per game, leading Marquette (13-5, 7-0 BIG EAST) to a 3-0 week with wins over Providence, Butler and Xavier. Blockton led the Golden Eagles with 25 points against the Bulldogs, including the game-winner with 0.8 seconds left on the clock. She is averaging 19.8 ppg to lead the league in scoring. Marquette's 7-0 start to league play is its finest in program history and the second best by any BIG EAST team since conference realignment.
Georgetown is 3-14 all-time against the Golden Eagles with all 17 meetings coming in BIG EAST Conference play. The Blue & Gray is 2-7 at home, with the two wins coming in the past three home meetings. Last year, GU fell, 84-77, at McDonough Arena in an odd contest. The stats were eerily similar as both teams had 45 rebounds and shot 40.6 percent (28-for-69) from the field as well as 65.4 percent (17-for-26) from the line. Each squad committed 13 turnovers, and Georgetown managed eight steals. The difference came from long range as MU went 11-for-24, and GU was just 4-for-18. The Blue & Gray fell in the next two meetings in the regular season as well as the BIG EAST Tournament contest.
After scoring in double figures for the seventh game in a row and leading DePaul to a 3-0 week, Mart'e Grays was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll for the second consecutive week. Grays is leading DePaul in scoring with 14.5 ppg which ranks her ninth in the conference. The Blue Demons downed Creighton, Xavier and Butler to improve to 14-5 overall and 6-1 in BIG EAST play. DePaul currently sits alone in second place in the league standings.
The Hoyas are 2-17 all-time against the Blue Demons and 1-16 in BIG EAST Conference play. In the last home meeting, Georgetown fell, 79-70, at McDonough Arena a season ago. GU is 1-7 at home against DePaul. The lone conference victory was a 74-65 win at home during the 2009-10 season.
