Farrell’s Late Goal Leads No. 4 Georgetown Past Providence

WASHINGTON – The No. 4 Georgetown women's soccer team shut out the Providence Friars, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Shaw Field. Senior Caitlin Farrell (Wallingford, Conn. / Choate Rosemary Hall) scored the game-winning goal with less than 10 minutes to play to advance the unbeaten Hoyas to 13-0-2 this season and 6-0 in the BIG EAST. The Friars fell to 8-5-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the league.

"This was a good win against a strong Providence squad," said head coach Dave Nolan. "They don't give up a lot of goals and we knew we would have to be patient. Our front four were very dynamic and really put Providence under pressure the whole game and we were a little unlucky not to have score a few more. However, they were always dangerous on the counter attack and on set pieces and I thought our back line did a great job of limiting them to a few moments. We now head into a tough week with two big games, away to Marquette on Thursday and then at home to Butler next Sunday."

The Blue & Gray defense was unstoppable against Providence, as it allowed the Friars to take just six shots throughout the 90 minutes of play. Each Hoya defender stepped up individually to protect senior goalkeeper Arielle Schechtman (Del Mar, Calif. / La Jolla Country Day / UCLA) in the net, not allowing the Friars to open up the scoring. With just 30 seconds left in the first half, Providence fired two quick shots to try taking the lead into the second, but sophomore defender Kelly Ann Livingstone (Glen Ridge, N.J. / Glen Ridge) made two crucial saves using her body to block the shots.

Georgetown controlled the ball for the majority of the game, seeking multiple opportunities to put GU up on the board. In the 38th minute, freshman Boo Jackson (Marlton, N.J. / Cherokee) came close to open up the scoring for the Hoyas, but just missed the net, hitting the right post instead while Providence goalkeeper Shelby Hogan was out of the net.

Finally, in the 83rd minute, junior Paula Germino-Watnick (Chevy Chase, Md. / Bethesda-Chevy Chase) took a shot inside the box but it deflected off of a Friar defender and rolled right back to Farrell. Without any hesitation, Farrell fired the ball into the back of the net, giving the Blue & Gray a 1-0 lead with less than 10 minutes left to play. The Hoya defense did not allow Providence to take any shots in the remaining minutes to avoid overtime.

The goal marked Farrell's 14th of the season and the ninth-straight game that she scored a goal. The forward also scored the game-winning goal last week in overtime against Villanova.

The Hoyas outshot the Friars, 20-6, and took 10 corner kicks to their four. Hogan recorded eight saves while Schechtman made four. Additionally, Schechtman tallied her 10th shutout of the season and 42nd overall.

Next up, the Blue & Gray will hit the road to Marquette on Thursday, Oct. 18 for an 8 p.m. kickoff slate. The game will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN). Live stats will also be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
