WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's rowing team is set for its second race of the fall season as it travels to Boston for the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta. The Hoyas will send a lightweight 4+ and a heavyweight 8+ to compete amongst the best schools and programs in the world.
Lightweight
Georgetown's only lightweight crew will hit the water at 1:27 p.m. on Sunday for the Men's Lightweight Fours as they take on boats from Yale, Harvard, Dartmouth and Cornell, among others. The four features
Ryan Zuccala (Orchard Park, N.Y.) as the coxswain with
Artym Hayda (Providence, R.I.) as the stroke followed by
Olivier Malle (New York, N.Y.)
Liam Lafferty (Orinda, Calif.) and
Hector Formoso-Murias (Key Biscayne, Fla.) to round out the foursome. This lineup is coming off an impressive second-place finish in the lightweight 4+ event at the Navy Day Regatta a week ago.
"We're excited to show the league what we're working with," said Varsity Lightweight Coach
Lee Rumpf. "The Georgetown lightweight women won the lightweight fours event last year and we look to follow quickly in their footsteps this weekend in Boston. The guys are hungry for it and you can see it in the way they attack each stroke."
Heavyweight
The heavyweights launch at 1:55 p.m. for the men's championship eights race, which is widely viewed as one of the most competitive races in the regatta. In the "A" boat,
Maxim Goohs (Potomac, Md.) will serve as the coxswain with
Justin English (Bettendorf, Iowa) at stroke followed by
Daniel Eigler-Harding (Arlington, Va.),
Ian Estevao (Arlington, Va.),
Clemente Borgogni (Rye, N.Y.),
Luke Nassif (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.),
Jack Mozingo (Darien, Conn.),
Owen O'Brien Powers (Portland, Ore.) and
Emmett Orts (Philadelphia, Pa.). They will compete against 31 other crews, including Cal, Yale, Harvard, Northeastern, Washington and Boston University. The majority of this crew competed in the collegiate 8+ race at Navy Day where they finished in sixth place out of 27 entries.
"The championship eights race has a very deep field this year and I expect there to be world class speed in the event," said Head Coach
Luke Agnini. "I was very pleased with the work we got done on the Potomac this week. New people have earned the right to race in our top boat and the more time on the water we have, the more we keep learning about these young freshmen. I have also been very happy with the progress from our upperclassmen. They are making great changes and they are fitter than ever. With that said, I know there are a bunch of guys at home right now who are disappointed not to be here and I expect a very intense few weeks of inter-squad competition when we return from Boston. I really love the fire of the team this year and I have been impressed with their technical development so far. We still have a very long way to go until the eastern sprints and this weekend will be a good first test against most of the conference."
Following the HOCR, the Hoyas will be back on the water for the Princeton Chase in Princeton, New Jersey on Oct. 28.
