WASHINGTON– The Georgetown University men's tennis team competed at the ITA Regionals this past weekend in Blacksburg, Va., hosted by Virginia Tech. Eleven members of the squad competed in the event with freshman
Carlos Grande (Miami, Fla. / Belen Jesuit) advancing to the round of 64 in the main draw and doubles pair
Rohan Kamdar (Singapore / Anglo Chinese School) and
Connor Lee (San Marino, Calif. / San Marino) advancing to the round of 32.
In singles play,
Cesar Cernuda (Madrid, Spain / ES International School) defeated Chris Kuhnle from Penn State 6-2, 6-1 in the qualifying round to advance to the main draw where he was defeated by his opponent from William and Mary.
Kamdar and Lee each took early leads in their first sets 6-2, but dropped the next two to be edged by their opponents. Kamdar competed in the consolation draw and defeated Graham Conran from the University of Delaware in straight sets 6-4, 6-1.
Ian Witmer (North Palm Beach, Fla. / The Benjamin School) battled his opponent from the University of Richmond to three sets, dropping the third in the tiebreaker 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(5).
Grande defeated 17th seed Alvaro Arce from James Madison in the tiebreaker 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(1) to advance to the round of 64. He competed to save three match points and fought back from 1-5 in the third set.
In doubles play, four pairs competed with the duo of Kamdar and Lee defeating their opponent from George Washington 8-4 to advance to the round of 32.
The Hoyas return to the court on Thursday, Nov. 1 as they travel to Palos Verdes, Calif. for the Jack Kramer Classic. The event will conclude GU's fall tournament play. Match play begins on January 20.
