WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University swimming & diving team opens the 2018-19 season on Saturday as it hosts Davidson College at Albert G. McCarthy Pool. The dual meet will begin at 1 p.m. and admission is free to the public.
The Hoyas are coming off a successful campaign last year that saw the women's squad finish second at the 2018 BIG EAST Championships for the fifth-consecutive season, while the men placed third. Over the four-day championship meet, the Hoyas set a total of 13 new school records and won six gold medals. The Blue & Gray put 22 student-athletes on the All-BIG EAST Team, including a league-high 13 on the women's side.
Head Coach
Jack Leavitt, who is entering his third season on the Hilltop, has 16 of the team's All-BIG EAST selections back for this year. Leading the way is the BIG EAST Championship Most Outstanding Male Swimmer
Drew Carbone (Chelmsford, Mass. / Central Catholic), as well as the championship's Most Outstanding Women's Diver,
Elizabeth Miller (Wayland, Mass. / Wayland).
Leavitt has also brought in a talented freshman class. The Hoyas welcomed
six women and
five men to the roster who will look to make an immediate impact in the pool.
Last season, Georgetown made the trip down to North Carolina for a dual meet at Davidson. The two programs split as the women came away with a 172-120 victory, while the men fell, 176-123. On the women's side
Phoebe Slaughter (Darien, Conn. / Darien) won a trio of events as she touched the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle, the 200-yard backstroke and the 200-yard IM.
Cristina Barrett (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham) swept the distance events, sweeping both the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyles. The Hoyas also swept the top four spots in both diving events as Miller took the 1-meter dive and
Naomi Peng (Gainesville, Fla. / Eastside) claimed the 3-meter.
Carbone led the men's squad with three individual victories as well, winning both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke as well as the 200-yard IM.
Ryan Blom (Hershey, Pa. / Milton Hershey) also swept the 1- and 3-meter diving events.
Following Saturday's meet, the Hoyas will hit the road for the first time, traveling up to Baltimore for a three-team meet at Towson. Georgetown will take on both the host Tigers and James Madison. The meet will begin at 2:30 p.m.
