– The No. 5 Georgetown women's soccer team defeated the Villanova Wildcats on Sunday afternoon at Shaw Field in an overtime thriller, 1-0. Senior Caitlin Farrell
(Wallingford, Conn. / Choate Rosemary Hall) scored the game-winning goal with less than two minutes left in the first overtime period. With the win, the unbeaten Hoyas advance to 12-0-2 overall and 5-0 in the BIG EAST, while the Wildcats fall to 9-5 on the season and 3-2 in the conference.
"This was a difficult game for us and a lot of credit goes to Villanova and their coaching staff," said head coach Dave Nolan
. "They shrank the game and made us play in the spaces we didn't want to. We huffed and puffed but didn't produce enough moments of real quality. The few times we did, we created a few good chances and ultimately the winning goal. They were always a danger on set pieces and on counter attacks, so I am happy we managed another shutout. Offensively, Kyra Carusa
was our best player and her assist for the winner was first class. Thankfully we get a week to prepare for Providence now."
The Blue & Gray played a physically-tough match against Villanova, but was able to come out on top. A strong GU defense held the Wildcats from scoring, allowing them to take only seven shots throughout the 98 minutes. The Hoyas had many opportunities to score, but could not capitalize on any of the shots. Junior Paula Germino-Watnick
(Chevy Chase, Md. / Bethesda-Chevy Chase) had a chance to open up the scoring in the 23rd minute, but Villanova goalkeeper Hensley Hancuff deflected the ball out of the net.
The Hoyas took a corner kick in the 88th minute and looked to score the game-winning goal, but a shot by junior Carson Nizialek
(Chantilly, Va. / Freedom) went wide, forcing the two teams into overtime with a 0-0 score.
Villanova had possession of the ball for the majority of overtime, but senior goalkeeper Arielle Schechtman
(Del Mar, Calif. / La Jolla Country Day / UCLA) did her job of protecting the goal. Finally, in the 98th minute, the Hoyas were on a breakaway and found a chance to score. Junior Grace Nguyen
(Lilburn, Ga. / Parkview) found graduate student Kyra Carusa
(San Diego, Calif. / Del Norte / Stanford) through multiple Villanova defenders in the box. Carusa connected with Farrell who was inside the six-yard box as one Wildcat dove for the ball in an attempt to interfere with the pass. Farrell received the pass and nailed the shot right past Hancuff, scoring the game-winning goal for the Hoyas.
The goal marked Farrell's 13th of the season and Carusa tallied her seventh assist. Both forwards lead the team in the respective categories. Additionally, Schechtman recorded her ninth shutout this season and 41st overall.
Georgetown outshot the Wildcats, 18-7, and took 12 corner kicks to their five. Schechtman recorded six saves at goal, while Hancuff registered eight.
