No. 1 Seeded Georgetown Hosts Washington State in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

WASHINGTON – The top-seeded Georgetown University women's soccer team (18-0-3) will face the Washington State Cougars (13-5-1) in the second round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Shaw Field. Live stats and a live video stream, with Monika Moore calling the play-by-play, will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.

The Georgetown-Washington State game is one of two NCAA Tournament matches on Friday, as the Hoyas will host a game between Duke and Lipscomb at 11 a.m. on Shaw Field.

This is the seventh-straight NCAA Tournament appearance for the Hoyas, who ranked second in the nation in the final United Soccer Coaches poll, and their eighth appearance in the last nine years, all coming under Head Coach Dave Nolan. Georgetown finished the season with an RPI of 4 in the most recent report and earned one of four of the top seeds in the tournament. Stanford, who is ranked No. 1 in the country, Florida State and North Carolina rounded out the other top-seeded teams in the bracket of 64 teams.

The Blue & Gray defeated Central Connecticut State on Saturday 3-1 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Shaw Field. Georgetown was down 1-0 at the half but scored three late goals in the second half to bounce back and advance to the next round. Junior Paula Germino-Watnick (Chevy Chase, Md. / Bethesda-Chevy Chase) opened up the scoring for the Hoyas in the 70th minute. Senior Amanda Carolan (Bayville, N.J. / Central Regional) and graduate student Kyra Carusa (San Diego, Calif. / Del Norte / Stanford) followed up with two more goals to put GU ahead. In goal, senior Arielle Schechtman (Del Mar, Calif. / La Jolla Country Day / UCLA) recorded a single save and the Hoya defense allowed just four shots from the Blue Devils in the 90 minutes of play.

Georgetown finished the BIG EAST conference 8-0-1 and clinched its third-consecutive BIG EAST Championship title as well as the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship title for the second year in a row. The Hoyas became the first team in the league to three-peat since Notre Dame (1995-2001) and claimed the conference's automatic berth into the tournament. The Blue & Gray claimed four of the major BIG EAST awards and six players made the All-BIG EAST Team. Senior Caitlin Farrell (Wallingford, Conn. / Choate Rosemary Hall) was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, junior Meaghan Nally (Herndon, Va. / South Lakes) was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and Schechtman was named the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year for the second year in a row. Georgetown Head Coach Dave Nolan and his coaching staff were named the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year. Germino-Watnick joined Farrell, Nally and Schechtman on the All-BIG EAST First Team and Carusa and sophomore Grace Nguyen (Lilburn, Ga. / Parkview) were named to the second team.
 
Farrell is one of three Hoyas who has started all 21 games this season. She leads the squad with 37 points from 17 goals and three assists. She has recorded at least one point in 13 of the last 15 games. Carusa has also started all 21 games this season and comes in second on the team with 25 points made up of eight goals and nine assists. Schechtman has allowed just six goals in 18 games at net and has recorded 13 clean sheets. The senior registers a .270 GAA, 67 saves and a .931 save percentage.
 
The Blue & Gray ranks second in the country in GAA (.366) and save percentage (.905) and sits fifth in shutout percentage (.619). Farrell is second in the NCAA in game-winning goals (8), fourth in total goals (17), sixth in total points (37) and shots on goal per game (2.57) and seventh in goals per game (.81). Additionally, Schechtman leads the country in GAA (.304) and shutouts (13) and is second in save percentage (.918).

Washington State holds an overall record of 13-5-1 and finished the Pac-12 Conference 10-1-1. The Cougars defeated Montana in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday 5-1. Junior Morgan Weaver leads the squad with 30 points off of 13 goals and four assists this season and senior Maddy Haro is second on the team with 21 points from three goals and 15 assists. Haro is ranked second in the country in total assists this season and tallied two helpers in the win on Friday against Montana. Rachel Thompson has allowed 15 goals in her 13 games as goalkeeper. The redshirt junior registers a 1.27 GAA, 38 saves and a .717 save percentage.

Saturday's game will be the first meeting between the Hoyas and the Cougars. The winner of the Georgetown-Washington State match will advance to the third round and face the winner of the Duke-Lipscomb match. The third round game will take place on Sunday at Shaw Field at 11 a.m.
