WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University swimming & diving team finished the first day of the Bucknell Invitational on Friday, with both the men's and women's squads sitting in third place after 12 total events. The Hoya women have accumulated 327 points, trailing only Towson (490) and Fordham (391), while the men's side has 269.5 points to trail only Towson (415) and La Salle (295).
Christina Barrett (Chatham, N.J. / Chatham) had GU's top finish of the evening on the women's side, placing third in the 500-yard freestyle.
Belinda Donohoe (Cambridge, Mass. / Concord Carlisle) was among the top eight qualifiers out of the prelims and touched the wall sixth in the 50-yard freestyle A final. In the 200-yard IM,
Phoebe Slaughter (Darien, Conn. / Darien) qualified for the A final and took home a seventh-place finish.
On the diving boards,
Elizabeth Miller (Wayland, Mass. / Wayland),
Naomi Peng (Gainesville, Fla. / Eastside) and
Riley Fujioka (Los Altos, Calif. / Los Altos) finished second, third and fourth, respectively, in the 1-meter dive.
Margaret Barnhorst (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. / Ponte Vedra) was close behind in seventh.
On the men's side, the freshman duo of
Brett Sherman (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) and
Michael Wheeler (Lafayette, Calif. / Campolindo) took second and third, respectively, in the 500-yard freestyle as Wheeler won a tight battle by .30 seconds for the bronze position.
Drew Carbone (Chelmsford, Mass. / Central Catholic) placed third in the 200-yard IM, improving on his time from the prelims by nearly two seconds.
Griffin Edmonds (Norwalk, Conn. / New Canaan) was GU's lone male diver, turning in a fifth-place finish in the 3-meter event.
Day two of the Bucknell Invitational will get underway at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning with preliminary action. The evening finals will begin at 6 p.m. Live scoring will be available at GUHoyas.com.
