This past weekend the Hoyas, led by the efforts of Trey Mourning (Miami, Fla. / Ransom Everglades), defeated Campbell University 93-85 to improve their record to 5-1 on the season. Mourning's career-high 27 led four Hoyas in double figures as freshman James Akinjo (Oakland, Calif. / Salesian College Preparatory) added 17, senior Jessie Govan (Queens Village, N.Y. / Wings Academy) chipped in 13 and freshman Josh LeBlanc (Baton Rouge, La. / Madison Prep Academy) tallied 11. Mourning grabbed a team-best and career-high 12 off the glass as the Blue & Gray outrebounded the Camels, 41-32. Akinjo paced the offense with four assists as the team totaled 22 helpers. GU hit 49.3 percent from the field on 33-of-67 shooting.
To add to an already impressive week, Mourning was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on Monday after registering his first career double-double on a pair of career-best efforts.
Through six games, the Blue & Gray has established a defense that ranks second in the BIG EAST in field goal percentage defense allowing opponents to shoot just 41.6 percent from the field. The Hoyas also lead the conference in blocked shots with 31, averaging 5.2 per contest. On the offensive side, Georgetown leads the BIG EAST in assists primarily driven by the performance of Akinjo, who is averaging 5.3 apg.
Richmond (2-4) is coming off a loss against Hampton University last Sunday night. Sophomore forward Nathan Cayo led the Spiders with 23 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Grant Golden pitched in 22 points along with five boards in the contest. Golden leads the Spiders as he averages 20.0 ppg while Jacob Gilyard chips in 16.6 ppg.
Wednesday night's game marks the 10th all-time meeting between Georgetown and Richmond. The Hoyas control the series with a 7-2 record. The two teams faced off last season in Virginia, where the Blue & Gray came away with an 82-76 victory. Sophomore Jamorko Pickett (Washington, D.C./Massanutten Military Academy [Va.]) contributed 12 points and senior Kaleb Johnson (South Hill, Va./The Carlisle School) provided 11. Govan also chipped in 14 points. Overall, Georgetown has a 130-124 record against Atlantic 10 schools.
