WASHINGTON – Three Hoyas competed at the U.S. Winter National Championships on Thursday, the second day of the four-day meet at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, North Carolina. The championships serve as the first opportunity to qualify for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials.
Sophomore
Drew Carbone (Chelmsford, Mass. / Central Catholic) won his preliminary heat, touching the wall in a time of 2:07.08 to finish 0.32 seconds ahead of his opponent from East Carolina. His time was 18th overall, qualifying him for the evening finals. In the C final, he improved his time by more than a half second, finishing with a time of 2:06.46 to place fourth. He was just 1.56 seconds from qualifying for the Olympic Trials.
Freshman
Brett Sherman (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) opened the day with a second-place finish in the first heat of the 400-meter freestyle. His time of 4:04.89 ended up as the 26th-fastest time in the prelims, just two spots and 0.77 seconds out of qualifying for the evening finals.
Senior
Seth Maslowski (Cary, N.C. / Green Hope) raced in the 50-meter freestyle, placing fifth in his heat with a time of 24.56 seconds. His time ranked 55th overall as he missed the evening finals.

Carlson Temple (San Diego, Calif. / Patrick Henry) will kick things off in the 400-meter IM. Temple will then be right back in the pool for the 100-meter breaststroke, before Carbone swims in his second event of the weekend - the 100-meter backstroke.
