WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's basketball team is set for its 2018-19 season opener against the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Tuesday evening at Capital One Arena. Tip-off is slated for 8:30 p.m.
The game can be seen live on MASN2 with Dickie Simpkins calling the play-by-play and Wayne Randazzo serving as the color analyst. Fans can listen locally on The Team 980 with Rich Chvoktin handling the call.
Patrick Ewing begins his second year as head coach and looks to build off a promising 2017-18 season where the Hoyas finished with a 15-15 record. Georgetown will have a good mix of returning players, as well as six newcomers, all competing for valuable minutes.
"We are looking forward to getting the season underway," said Coach Ewing. "It's all about getting better, hopefully doing better in the BIG EAST Tournament and making the NCAAs, but we're taking it one step at a time."
Georgetown opens the season one day after the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced its 2019 Citizen Naismith Trophy Men's Watch List. Senior center
Jessie Govan (Queens Village, N.Y./Wings Academy) has been selected as one of 50 men's players to watch throughout the year. Govan started all 30 games last season and finished the season averaging 17.9 ppg and 10.0 rpg. He is the first Hoya to average a double-double since Mike Sweetney accomplished the feat during the 2002-03 campaign. Govan was also selected to the watch list for the 2019 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award, which recognizes the top centers in men's college basketball.
Also looking to make an impact for the Blue & Gray this year is sophomore guard
Jamorko Pickett (Washington, D.C. / Massanutten Military Academy [Va.]). He appeared in all 30 games, while starting 28 contests, last season and was a unanimous selection to the BIG EAST All-Freshman team. Joining Pickett on the BIG EAST All-Freshman team was sophomore guard
Jahvon Blair (Brampton, Ont. / Athlete Institute Prep), who appeared in all 30 games last season averaging 9.6 ppg. Junior guard
Jagan Mosely (Marlboro, N.J. / St. Anthony) will also look to become a vital piece of the rotation for Georgetown coming off a sophomore campaign where he averaged 6.6 ppg.
Tuesday's game marks the ninth meeting between Georgetown and Maryland Eastern Shore, with the Hoyas commanding the all-time series at 8-0. The two teams met up last season on Nov. 18 as guard
Kaleb Johnson (South Hill, Va. / The Carlisle School) led the team with 24 points while Govan added 23 points and 14 rebounds.
Live stats will be available on GUHoyas.com.
Following the Hoyas opening tilt with Eastern Shore, the Blue & Gray remain home to take on Central Connecticut State on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 6 p.m. at to Capital One Arena.
