WASHINGTON – For the second time in as many days, sophomore
Drew Carbone (Chelmsford, Mass. / Central Catholic) qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials, doing so in the evening finals of the 200-meter backstroke at the U.S. Winter National Championships this weekend at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, North Carolina. The four-day meet served as the first opportunity to qualify for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials.
A day after qualifying for the Olympic Trials in the 100-meter backstroke during the morning prelims, Carbone needed the evening finals to reach the mark in the 200 back. Swimming against the best competition in the A final, Carbone swam to a time of 2:02.83 to beat the qualifying time by 0.16 seconds and punch his ticket to Omaha in 2020. He finished seventh overall.
Carbone finished second in his preliminary heat, touching the wall in 2:04.18. His time was good for ninth overall and, after a swimmer ahead of him scratched, he was into the A final.
Carlson Temple (San Diego, Calif. / Patrick Henry) was also in the pool on Saturday, racing in the 200-meter breaststroke. He finished seventh in his preliminary heat, one of the fastest in the event, with a time of 2:23.52. Temple's time ranked 30th overall as he just missed out on the evening finals by 1.52 seconds.
The Georgetown swimming & diving team will be back in action on Saturday, Jan. 12 when they host District rivals George Washington and American at McCarthy Pool. The meet will serve as GU's Senior Day as the program will recognize its 11 seniors.
