Farrell Named Finalist for 2019 Honda Award for Soccer

WASHINGTON – Senior Caitlin Farrell (Wallingford, Conn. / Choate Rosemary Hall) of the Georgetown women's soccer team has been named a Class of 2019 Honda Sport Award for Soccer finalist, announced by the Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA) organization on Tuesday. Farrell is the first player in program history to be named a finalist for this award.

The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by the CWSA for the past 43 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA-sanctioned sports and signifies "the best of the best in collegiate athletics". The winner of the sport award becomes a finalist for the Woman Athlete of the Year and the prestigious 2019 Honda Cup, which will be presented on a live telecast on CBS Sports Network on Monday, June 24, 2019 in downtown Los Angeles.

The nominees were chosen by a panel of coaches representing the United Soccer Coaches. The Honda Sport award winner for soccer will be announced next week after voting by administrators from over 1,000 NCAA member schools. Each NCAA member institution has a vote.

Farrell was unanimously selected as the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year and received the only unanimous vote to be on the All-BIG EAST First Team. The senior forward was named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team and earned the Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the tournament. Farrell was named to the United Soccer Coaches Division I All-East Regional First Team and a First Team All-American. She led the Hoyas in her last season on the Hilltop with 39 points from 18 goals and three assists. She is tied for first at Georgetown with most goals in a single season (18) and finished second in the country in game-winning goals (8), third in total goals (18) and fourth in total points (39).

Additionally, Farrell is the first player on the GU women's soccer team, and only the second player in school history, to be named a MAC Hermann Trophy Finalist. The senior is one of three female finalists in the running for the prestigious college soccer award, where the winner will be announced on Jan. 4, 2019 in St. Louis, Missouri.

Georgetown finished the 2018 campaign as the most successful team in program history. The Hoyas completed the season with an overall record of 21-1-3 and reached the College Cup for the second time in three years. The Blue & Gray three-peated the BIG EAST Championship and won back-to-back BIG EAST Regular Season titles. The team set the program record for most wins (21) and fewest goals allowed (10).

Honda Sport Award winners will be presented with the honor during on-campus presentations throughout the year and all Honda Sport Award winners become a finalist for the prestigious 2019 Honda Cup award presented in June.

The CWSA, celebrating its 42nd year, has honored the nation's top NCAA women athletes for their superior athletic skills, leadership, academic excellence and eagerness to participate in community service.  Since commencing its sponsorship in 1986, Honda has provided more than $3.1 million in institutional grants to the universities of the award winners and nominees to support women's athletics programs.
