WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball squad dropped a pair on day two of the FGCU Kickoff Classic in Fort Myers, Florida. On Saturday, GU dropped a 4-2 decision to the tournament host, FGCU, and later were defeated by Ball State, 5-1.
Sophomore Noelle Holiday (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) led the team at the plate in both games. GU trailed the Eagles until the top of the seventh until Holiday hit a home run with junior Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) already on base.
Sophomore Katie Vannicola (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS) pitched 5.0 innings in the circle, giving up seven hits and four runs, while striking out two. In Georgetown's second game of the day against Ball State, Holiday singled her hit toward left field in the bottom of the sixth inning, allowing senior Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) to reach home plate, putting the Hoyas in the scoring column, trailing the Cardinals 5-1.
Freshman London Diller (Abilene, Texas/George Ranch High School) took the nod in the circle for 4.1 meetings, giving up three runs and striking out three. Vannicola relieved Diller for 0.2 innings, giving up two runs, until sophomore Isabelle Ortiz (Tucson, Ariz./Bonita Vista High School) pitched the last 2.0 innings, striking out one and did not give up any hits.
