WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team won its first game in the Gamecock Invitational against Michigan State on Friday in Columbia, South Carolina. The Hoyas won, 4-3, improving them to 2-4 on the season.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, junior Kelly Amen (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) knocked one towards left field for a double and then advanced to third base on an error, allowing freshman Savannah Jones (San Rafael, Calif./Terra Linda High School) and junior Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) to reach home plate. Amen's hit tied the game with the Spartans, 2-2.
The score remained 2-2 the rest of the game, enabling the two teams to go into extra innings. In the bottom of the ninth inning, with MSU leading, 3-2, freshman Arylene Campos (Nogales, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro High School) got on base with a triple to right field. Campos's power hit allowed freshman Reagan Jones (Wyckoff N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) to score another run for the Hoyas. Junior Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md./Northern) came up to the plate and got on base due to an error, which allowed Campos to seal the game-winning run for the Hoyas. Sophomore Anna Brooks Pacha (Houston, Texas/St. John's Schoo l) pitched all 9.0 innings in the circle, giving up eight hits and three runs, while striking out six.
The Blue & Gray will return to the field tomorrow in the Gamecock Invitational at 10 a.m. against Mercer and again at 3 p.m. against Southern Illinois. Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
