WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team dropped a pair on the second day of the Gamecock Invitational in Columbia, South Carolina. The Hoyas were defeated in their first game of the day by Mercer, 8-4, and later to Southern Illinois, 13-4. With the two losses, GU is now 2-6 on the season.
In the first game against the Bears, with sophomore Sera Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Marian) on base already in the top of the second inning, and senior Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) at bat, Kane reached base on an error, allowing Stevens to reach home plate. With Kane's RBI, Georgetown was put in the scoring column, 3-1, with the Bears leading.
In the top of the fourth, junior Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md./Northern) hit a home run to pull the Hoyas with one, down 3-2.
Two innings later, Stevens hit a two-RBI triple to bring home freshman Savannah Jones (San Rafael, Calif./Terra Linda High School) and sophomore Alexa Dolby (Round Hill, Va./Woodgrove) as the Hoyas trailed 7-4, but wouldn't score again as Mercer closed out the game with an 8-4 victory.
In the circle, sophomore Katie Vannicola (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS) took the loss, pitching 6.0 innings, giving up 11 hits and eight runs, while striking out two.
During the second game of the day against Southern Illinois, the Hoyas could not find an opportunity to score until the bottom of the fifth inning. With Stevens and Dolby both on base and junior Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) at the plate, Belknap hit one up the middle of the field to collect two RBIs, making the score 13-2. Shortly after, sophomore Noelle Holiday (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) landed a double, bringing Belknap home, 13-3. Jones brought in an RBI for GU with a single, allowing freshman Reagan Jones (Wyckoff, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) to score Georgetown's fourth and final run of the inning, as well as the game.
Freshman London Diller (Abilene, Texas/George Ranch High School) took the loss in the circle, pitching 1.0 inning, giving up five hits and six runs.
