Feb. 20, 2018
WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University swimming & diving team travels to Geneva, Ohio on Tuesday for the 2018 BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championships, presented by Jeep. The four-day meet, February 21-24, begins on Wednesday afternoon at the SPIRE Institute. Both the men's and women's teams have finished second at each of the past four championships and will look to win the program's first ever BIG EAST Championship.
For a complete schedule, including results at the end of each day, and to purchase single or all-session tickets, please visit the BIG EAST Championship Central page.
In last season's championships, Georgetown medaled 20 times in individual events. A pair of Hoyas will look to defend their individual titles from 2017 as junior Ryan Blom (Hershey, Pa./Milton Hershey) will look for the three-peat in the 1-meter dive and senior Molly Fitzpatrick (Manchester, N.H./The Derryfield School) looks for the career sweep in the 200-yard breaststroke as well as her third title in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Heading into this year's events, several Hoyas are among the BIG EAST leaders in their respective events. The GU men are led by freshman Drew Carbone (Chelmsford, Mass./Central Catholic) who owns the conference's top times in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke, as well as the 200-yard IM. Classmate Andrew Stange (St. James, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) is the BIG EAST leader in the 200-yard freestyle and has the second-fastest times in both the 100- and 500-yard freestyles. Blom holds the top score in the 1-meter dive, as well as the second-best score in the 3-meter event.
On the women's side, Fitzpatrick currently has the top times in both breaststroke events, while sophomore Christina Barrett (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) holds the second-fastest times in the 500- and 1,650-yard freestyle. Freshman Evie Mauzé (St. Louis, Mo./MICDS) also is second in the 200-yard backstroke. Fellow freshman Riley Fujioka (Los Altos, Calif./Los Altos), who set the Georgetown record in the 3-meter dive earlier this month, holds the second-best score in the BIG EAST.
The schedule for the 2018 BIG EAST Championships will consist of two sessions each day with the first session comprising of preliminary heats and the finals taking place in the second session.
