WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team dropped a 2-0 decision against Pittsburgh in the opener of the Chanticleer Showdown in Conway, South Carolina, and later fell to the tournament hosts, Coast Carolina, 7-5. With the losses, the Hoyas fall to 2-9 on the season.

Against Pittsburgh, which improved to 6-3-1, sophomore Anna Brooks Pacha (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) took the nod and pitched a complete game. Pacha gave up six hits, two runs and struck out 12.

Georgetown put runners in the scoring positon in the fifth inning. Freshman Savannah Jones (San Rafael, Calif./Terra Linda High School) landed a double but was left on base after sophomore Noelle Holiday (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) grounded out to shortstop. Senior Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) had a scoring opportunity in the sixth inning, with a steal of second and again of third, but was also left on base after sophomore Sera Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Marian) grounded out.

In game two against Coastal Carolina, the Hoyas fell short, 7-5 but made key plays to stay consistent throughout the game with the Chanticleers (10-3). Georgetown entered the scoring column in the second inning when Stevens landed on base with a double and collected an RBI to make it 1-0.

In the top of the third inning, junior Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md./Northern) blasted a hit towards center field and sent Jones and junior Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) to score for the Hoyas, improving the score to 3-1.

During the top of the fifth inning, Georgetown tied the game with Coastal Carolina, who took the lead in the bottom of the fourth, 5-3, from a fielding error and a two-RBI home run. Bennett responded to the change in lead with a two-RBI home run. The Chanticleers came back in the sixth inning and scored two more runs to win the game.

The Blue & Gray will take the field again tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. to meet Pittsburgh again, and then at noon to face Saint Joseph's. Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
