WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team went 1-1 on Saturday in the Chanticleer Showdown in Conway, South Carolina. The Hoyas defeated Pittsburgh, 5-3, in game one, after they dropped a 2-0 decision on the Panthers yesterday in the tournament opener. In game two against Saint Joseph's, GU fell, 7-3. With the 1-1 record on Saturday, GU stands at 3-10 overall.
In game one against the Panthers (7-4-1), the Hoyas found an opportunity to score immediately in the first inning. Freshman Savannah Jones (San Rafael, Calif./Terra Linda High School) landed a double and collected two RBIs to give GU the lead, 2-0.
In the third inning, Jones landed another double with a hit to center field, while advancing to third on the throw. Jones collected her third RBI of the game, advancing junior Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) to score, 3-0.
Sophomore Delaney Darden (Tustin, Calif./Beckman) tallied the third double for the Hoyas, giving Georgetown another run in the fourth inning, 4-0. Immediately after Darden's hit, freshman Reagan Jones (Wyckoff, N.J,/Immaculate Heart Academy) reach home plate on a passed ball to give the Hoyas a 5-0 lead. The Panthers scored a total of two runs during the final two innings, making the final score 5-2.
In the circle, freshman London Diller (Abilene, Texas/George Ranch High School) took the nod, pitching 5.2 innings, allowing four hits, two runs and three strikeouts. Junior Katie Vannicola (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS) went 1.1 innings in the circle, giving up one hit and one run.
In game two against the Hawks (4-4), Vannicola started off on the mound, pitching 0.1 innings, giving up two hits and three runs. Freshman Isabelle Ortiz (Tucson, Ariz./Bonita Vista High School) relieved Vannicola to pitch 1.2 innings, allowing three runs and striking out one. Sophomore Casey Kozak (Marlton, N.J./Bishop Eustace) finished off the rest of the game, giving up one hit and one run.
The Hoyas allowed seven runs within the first three innings, but held them for the remainder of the game. Georgetown did not enter the scoring column until the top of the sixth when junior Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md./Northern) singled to left field with a runner on third. Bennett made it safely to first, advancing senior Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) home to trail the Hawks, 7-1.
In the top of the seventh, sophomore Ciara Sullivan (Middletown, N.J./Middletown) hit a two-RBI home run, advancing GU, 7-3.
The Hoyas will conclude the Chanticleer Showdown tomorrow at noon to take on Coastal Carolina again. GU fell to the Chanticleers on Friday, 7-5. Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
