GU MBB 69, Providence 73

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Georgetown University men's basketball team could not hold on to a late lead as the Providence College Friars edged the Hoyas, 73-69, at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Tuesday night. With its fourth-consecutive loss, the Blue & Gray slips to 13-10 on the year with a 3-10 record in BIG EAST Conference play. Providence improves to 16-8 and holds a 7-4 record in league action.

"It's a learning experience but at some point you have to learn," Head Coach Patrick Ewing said after the game. "We can't keep letting games slips away from us. It was a hard-fought game. Both teams played hard. I'm disappointed we didn't win but you can't take anything away from them."

Junior center Jessie Govan (Queens Village, N.Y./Wings Academy) led the Hoyas as he tied his career best with 27 points. He was the lone Hoya in double figures as junior forward Marcus Derrickson (Bowie, Md./Brewster Academy [N.H.]) was second on the team in scoring with nine points, while tallying a team-leading nine rebounds. Freshman guard Jamorko Pickett (Washington, D.C./Massanutten Military Academy [Va.]) recorded a squad-best three assists.

Georgetown shot 42.9 percent for the game on 24-of-56 shooting. The Hoyas outrebounded the Friars, 39-37.

Govan came out firing for the Hoyas as he tallied 12-consecutive points for the Blue & Gray with the Hoyas holding the 13-9 advantage with 13:29 on the clock. As the scoring became a bit more balanced for the Hoyas, it was GU's guard play that helped the Hoyas pull ahead as senior Jonathan Mulmore (New Orleans, La./Redemption Christian [Texas]/Allegany) tallied four-straight behind a pair of free throws and a layup to give the Hoyas a 24-16 lead.

The freshman tandem of Pickett and guard Jahvon Blair (Brampton, Ont./Athlete Institute Prep) each nailed 3-pointers for the 30-20 advantage with 8:31 on the clock, forcing a PC timeout. As the teams traded buckets, Pickett's jumper at 5:59 put Georgetown up 36-26, its second 10-point advantage of the half. However, the Hoyas would go cold from the field down the stretch as the Friars staged a 14-3 run to take the 40-39 lead with 15 seconds left in the half. As the seconds ticked down, Govan sunk a trey at the buzzer and the Blue & Gray went into the break leading 42-40.

Providence tallied six unanswered points to open the second stanza before a bucket from sophomore guard Jagan Mosely (Marlboro, N.J./St. Anthony) gave the Hoyas their first points of the frame and cut the deficit to two, 46-44. GU's next eight points came from the junior class with forwards Derrickson and Kaleb Johnson (South Hill, Va./The Carlisle School) each nabbing a triple to sandwich a Govan layup to put the Hoyas up 52-51, their first lead of the half.

The teams traded the lead but six-straight points from Govan behind a pair of free throws and back-to-back layups pushed the Hoyas ahead, 65-62, forcing a Friar timeout. The Hoyas and Friars went cold from the field as both squads relied on trips to the line for point production. GU held the 69-64 lead, but with 1:49 to play but the Friars closed on a 9-0 run to clinch the 73-69 victory.

Providence shot 40.0 percent for the game with Jalen Lindsey scoring a team-best 17 points.

Georgetown returns to the District for its next game, hosting Seton Hall on Saturday, Feb. 10. Tipoff at Capital One Arena is schedule for 4 p.m. and the game will be shown live on CBS Sports Network. The game can be heard locally on 106.7 The Fan with Rich Chvotkin handling the call.
