WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team went 1-1 against Grand Canyon in a doubleheader on Friday evening in the Grand Canyon University Invitational in Phoenix, Arizona. The Hoyas defeated the Lopes in game one, 6-5, but fell in game two, 8-0. With the split record on Friday, GU holds a 6-14 record on the season, while GCU is now 15-11.
In game one, GU started off strong and took the lead, 1-0, in the first inning. Junior Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) doubled to left center allowing freshman NeNe Campos (Nogales, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro High School) to score.
The Hoyas led the game, 1-0, until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Lopes tied up the score.
In the top of the sixth inning, junior Sarah Bennett (Owings, Md./Northern) hit a two-run home run to center field, making the score 3-1. The Lopes came back in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game again with a two-RBI hit to left field.
As the game went into extra innings, Belknap advanced the score for the Hoyas in the eighth inning, stealing home on a passed ball. However, Grand Canyon responded in the bottom of the inning with a hit to center field, tying the game once again, 4-4. In the top of the ninth, senior Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) singled through the middle, collecting an RBI, but GCU evened the score, 5-5, with a single to left field.
The Hoyas ended the back and forth scoring in the 10th inning when sophomore Noelle Holiday (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) reached first base on a fielder's choice as freshman Deirdre Gallo (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) scored the game-winning run for Georgetown.
In the circle, sophomore Anna Brooks Pacha (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) pitched a complete game, giving up 13 hits, five runs and striking out four.
In game two against Grand Canyon, the Lopes entered the scoring column in the third inning with a 2-0 lead. GCU went on to score six more runs throughout the next three innings, while the Hoyas could not capitalize on any opportunities to score.
Freshman London Diller (Abilene, Texas/George Ranch High School) took the nod in game two on the mound. Diller pitched 3.0 innings while giving up six hits, five runs and striking out two. Sophomore Katie Vannicola (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS) relieved Diller for the next 1.0 innings, giving up two hits and one run, until sophomore Casey Kozack (Marlton, N.J./Bishop Eustace) finished off the game for GU, striking out two, while giving up two hits and two runs.
The Blue & Gray will take the field again tomorrow for day two of the Grand Canyon University Invitational at 1 p.m. to face Iowa. GU will then face Minnesota at 6 p.m. Live stats will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
