Final Stats
WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team lost both games on the opening day of the Charleston Invitational in Charleston, South Carolina. The Hoyas slipped to Eastern Illinois in game one, 10-2, and to Jacksonville State in game two, 2-0. With the losses, GU falls to 6-19 on the season, while the Panthers and the Gamecocks both improve their records, 18-7 and 10-12, respectively.
The Hoyas started off strong in game one against the Panthers. Sophomore Noelle Holiday (Bear, Del./Red Lion Christian Academy) reached base on an error in the top of the first inning, scoring senior Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington), giving Georgetown the lead, 1-0. Eastern Illinois responded shortly after at the plate, scoring two runs to give the Panthers the lead. GU gave up four more runs in the second inning, trailing behind, 6-1.
In the top of the fourth, Kane reached base on a fielder's choice, collecting an RBI for the Hoyas, 6-2. However, EIU went on to score four more runs in the fifth and sixth innings, making the final score 10-2.
Freshman London Diller (Abilene, Texas/George Ranch High School) took the nod on the mound, pitching 1.0 innings, giving up eight hits and six runs. Sophomore Katie Vannicola (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS) relieved Diller, going 4.1 innings in the circle. Vannicola gave up six hits, four runs and struck out two. The Blue & Gray had eight hits in game one.
In game two against Jacksonville State, the teams went scoreless until the fifth inning when the Gamecocks scored the first run of the game. JSU went on to score one more run in the sixth inning, making the final score 2-0.
Georgetown had seven hits against the Gamecocks, two of the hits coming from sophomore Sera Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Marian).
Sophomore Anna Brooks Pacha (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) started off in the circle for the Hoyas. Pacha pitched a complete game, giving up three hits, two runs and striking out six.
