Hoyas Host Duquesne in WNIT Second Round Matchup

March 18, 2018

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team will host the Duquesne University Dukes at McDonough Arena on Monday at 7 p.m. in the second round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). The Hoyas (16-15) defeated Delaware on Friday to advance to the second round for the first time since 2009.

In the 67-57 victory over Delaware, senior forward Cynthia Petke (Yaounde, Cameroon/-/Chipola College) led the way tying her career high with 26 points as well as seven rebounds and five assists. She was followed by junior guard Dionna White (Baltimore, Md./Milford Mill) who had 16 points and a squad-best six assists. Senior center Yazmine Belk (Queens, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) pulled down a team-high 16 rebounds for her career high while also tallying eight points.

The Hoyas outrebounded the Blue Hens, 44-33, and forced 12 turnovers on five steals while committing just 11 turnovers of their own. GU shot 36.9 percent (24-of-65) for the game, but allowed Delaware 40.0 percent (22-of-55) shooting. Only one Blue Hen scored in double figures as Nicole Enabosi managed 15 points.

This marks Georgetown's third-consecutive postseason berth, and the first under first-year Head Coach James Howard. The Blue & Gray has not advanced beyond the first round since 2009 when the squad made it to the WNIT quarterfinals before falling to Boston College, 65-56. Overall, this is the eighth appearance in the WNIT for the Blue & Gray. The program is 5-7 all-time in the postseason tournament.

White leads Georgetown with 18.2 ppg on the season as well as 6.4 rpg and 84 steals to lead the BIG EAST. She was the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and a First Team All-BIG EAST honoree. Petke is averaging 14.0 ppg and 10.2 rpg making her one of just two players in the BIG EAST to average a double-double. Petke has posted 18 double-doubles this season. She was the BIG EAST Most Improved Player and earned All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention. Senior guard Mikayla Venson (Arlington, Va./Yorktown/Virginia) is third on the squad with 13.2 ppg to round out the top three scorers for the Blue & Gray. She also has 2.0 rpg and has hit 51 3-pointers this season.

Chassidy Omogrosso scored a career-high 31 points to lead Duquesne to a 69-56 victory over Miami University in the team's first round matchup. Paige Cannon scored 14 and Conor Richardson added 10 points for the Dukes. Duquesne is 24-7 on the season and finished 13-3 in the Atlantic-10 to finish second in the league.

This will be the first meeting between the squads.

Tickets for the game can be purchased through Georgetown's Athletic Ticket Office or at the gate. Georgetown students are free of charge. Live stats and a webcast featuring Monica McNutt will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.

The winner of Monday's game will then face the winner of St. John's University and the University of Pennsylvania.
