WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team defeated UMBC, 7-2, on Sunday in the final day of the District Classic in Washington, D.C. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 5-12 on the season, while UMBC falls to 1-12.
Sophomore Anna Brooks Pacha (Houston, Texas/St. John's School) pitched a complete game. Pacha gave up only five hits, two runs, and struck out 11.
GU took the lead in the first inning when freshman Savannah Jones (San Rafael, Calif./Terra Linda High School) singled to right field, allowing junior Mallory Belknap (Scottsdale, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) to score the first run of the game. The Hoyas tallied their second run of the game, Jones' second RBI, in the second inning with an identical play from when Belknap scored in the first inning.
The Blue & Gray scored four runs in the fourth inning to make it 6-1. Senior Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington) started the rally off with a single to right field, scoring freshman Macy Cartwright (Naples, Fla./Naples High School). Shortly after, freshman Arylene Campos (Nogles, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro High School) reached first base on a fielder's choice, which sent freshman Reagan Jones (Wyckoff, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) home. With a passed ball by the Retrievers, Kane reached home plate to tally another run for the Hoyas. The last run of the inning on an RBI ground out by Belknap, pushing Campos across the plate.
Georgetown's game-sealing run occurred in the fifth inning when Campos bunted towards third base. While UMBC tried getting Campos out at first, Jones snuck past home plate, giving the Hoyas their final run of the game.
The Blue & Gray will play its first non-tournament game on March 7 in Tempe, Arizona against Arizona State. The contest is set for 8 p.m. EST. GU will then head to Phoenix, Arizona for the Grand Canyon University Invitational, March 9-11.
