WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University softball team was defeated by Towson, 12-1, at Nationals Youth Academy on Tuesday evening. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 12-30 this season, while the Tigers improve to 33-11.
At the plate, senior Theresa Kane (Mystic, Conn./Stonington), junior Kelly Amen (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough), sophomore Sera Stevens (Birmingham, Mich./Marian), and freshmen London Diller (Abilene, Texas/George Ranch) and Savannah Jones (San Rafael, Calif./Terra Linda) each contributed a hit to the effort. Amen also collected an RBI. GU recorded five hits against Towson.
The Tigers started off strong in the top of the first with three hits and three runs against Diller in the circle. Diller pitched 2.1 innings, giving up eight hits and nine runs while walking two and striking out one. Sophomore Katie Vannicola (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS) finished it off on the mound, going 2.2 innings and allowing five hits and three runs.
Towson opened up with a 5-0 lead entering the top of the second. The Blue & Gray responded offensively in the bottom of the second, scoring its only run in the game. GU's lone run came from Amen who singled to third base, advancing Stevens home on the throw to first. Georgetown put runners on base in every inning except the first, but could not capitalize on the opportunities to score.
The Blue & Gray will return to action on Wednesday against Virginia for a midweek game. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Nationals Youth Academy.
