QUEENS, N.Y. - The Georgetown University baseball team saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end, falling to St. John's 6-3, on Friday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference game at Jack Kaiser Stadium. With the loss, the Hoyas fall to 14-21 and 2-2 in the BIG EAST, while the Red Storm improve to 24-10 and 7-0 in conference action.
Jack Cushing (Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus) started on the mound and went 5.2 innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on 11 hits while striking out three. Kevin Superko (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley/Phillips Andover) fired 2.1 innings of one-run relief with one strikeout.
Ryan Weisenberg (Parkland, Fla./San Ramon Valley [Calif.]) had two hits and two RBIs to pace the offense, while Alex Bernauer (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont) also had two hits. Jake Bernstein (Frederick, Md./St. John's College HS) was on base three times with a single and two walks.
St. John's opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning, then tacked on single runs in the fourth and fifth to take a 4-0 lead.
The Hoyas cut the deficit in half with two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Bernauer led off with a single and moved up to second on a walk to Freddy Achecar III (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett School). Both runners advanced on a passed ball before, one out later, Weisenberg drove them both in with a double into the right-center field gap to make it a 4-2 game.
The Red Storm regained its four-run lead, 6-2, with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
A double steal by Michael DeRenzi (Mendham, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and Ryan P. Davis (Oak Hill, Va./Oakton) scored the final run for the Hoyas in the eighth inning as Davis crossed the plate and DeRenzi slid safely into second base.
