May 18, 2018 WASHINGTON - Georgetown University senior Chandler Hinson (Chattanooga, Tenn./The Baylor School) of the men's swimming & diving team was selected as one of the 29 men's winter sport recipients of the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, which recog-nizes student-athletes with plans on attending graduate school for their athletic and academic achievements, along with their work in the community and demonstrated leadership.
The NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, a $7,500 scholarship to be applied toward the graduate degree program of Hin-son's choice, is awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically, and are in their final year of inter-collegiate athletics competition. The Association awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for men and 87 for women. This season's NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients (29 men and 29 women) represent members of winter sports teams, including Basketball, Fencing, Gymnastics, Ice Hockey, Indoor Track and Field, Rifle, Skiing, Swimming and Diving, and Wrestling.
"I feel so honored to be able to be one of those students selected for this scholarship," Hinson said. "I am most excited to be able to represent Georgetown as one of the recipients. Additionally, this scholarship shows the NCAA's support of its student-athletes and helping them achieve their dreams through helping them financially afford graduate programs."
Hinson, a three-time member of the BIG EAST All-Academic Team, will graduate from the Hilltop on Saturday with a degree in global health from Georgetown's School of Nursing & Health Studies (NHS). He will travel to England in the fall to attend the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, working towards his masters of science in control of in-fectious diseases.
Hinson was a four-year competitor in freestyle and backstroke events for the Hoyas. He qualified for the BIG EAST Championships in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle all four years, claiming a silver medal in the 200 free as a sophomore and a bronze medal as a freshman. He also was a three-year qualifier in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing as high as fifth. Hinson also raced on the 400- and 800-yard freestyle relay teams in three BIG EAST Championships. He helped the Hoyas in gold in the 800 free relay as a junior and also earned three silvers and a bronze medal in relay events. In all, Hinson was a seven-time All-BIG EAST selection.
On Friday, he was the recipient of the Sister Helen Scarry, RJM, DMin, Award for Commitment to Social Justice Award at the NHS award ceremony.
