WASHINGTON – Four recently graduated Georgetown student-athletes have been named winners of the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award, as announced on Wednesday.
Amos Bartelsmeyer (SFS'17) of the men's cross country / track & field program,
Sam Madsen (MSB'18) from men's golf,
Jacquelyn Eleey (C'18) of women's golf and
Molly Fitzpatrick (NHS'18) from the women's swimming & diving program all earned the honors, which recognize academic and athletic achievement as well as community service. The four honorees is tied for the most in the conference with Marquette.
The Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Awards are given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST-sponsored sport based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who have attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council.
Bartelsmeyer, an All-American, had a strong start to the 2017-18 campaign as he earned All-BIG EAST honors and helped the Blue & Gray to its third-consecutive BIG EAST men's cross country team title. He went on to win the BIG EAST men's indoor mile at the indoor championships and competed at the NCAA championships, earning a pair of All-America honors at indoor nationals. Transitioning to the outdoor season, Bartelsmeyer won the BIG EAST 800-meter title and advanced to the 1,500-meter finals at the NCAA Championships, again earning All-America accolades. He closed his career as a seven-time All-American and a seven-time BIG EAST champion. A four-time member of the BIG EAST All-Academic team, Bartelsmeyer graduated from the School of Foreign Service in 2017 with a degree in science, technology and international affairs and is currently working towards his master's degree at Georgetown. He has also been honored by the USTFCCCA on it track & field all-academic squad.
Madsen excelled in both the classroom and on the golf course for the Hoyas. An All-BIG EAST Second Team selection in 2018, he recently captained the Blue & Gray to their second BIG EAST Men's Golf Championship in three seasons. Madsen earned medalist honors for the first time in his collegiate career at the ECU Intercollegiate this spring and finished in the top 10 at the BIG EAST Championship in three of his four seasons on the Hilltop. Off the course, Madsen graduated from Georgetown's McDonough School of Business in May with a finance degree and was a four-time member of the BIG EAST All-Academic Team. He was named Georgetown's male winner of the BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete Scholarship this spring.
Eleey capped off a tremendous career by being named the BIG EAST Player of the Year after winning the 2018 BIG EAST Championship in April. Eleey, who earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Year honors after winning the 2015 BIG EAST Championship, became the first women's golfer in BIG EAST history to win two individual conference titles. As a senior, she played in all 33 rounds and compiled a 74.85 stroke average, becoming the first player in program history to break 75. She also set the record for career stroke average, recording a 75.34 over 116 rounds in her four years. Eleey, who was a member of the 2016 BIG EAST All-Academic Team, graduated in May from Georgetown's College with a degree in sociology.
Fitzpatrick graduated in May as one of GU's most decorated swimmers, earning 15 All-BIG EAST honors, given to individuals who finish in the top three at the BIG EAST Championships, and winning seven individual titles. At this year's championships, Fitzpatrick earned All-BIG EAST nods in four events and won the 200-yard breaststroke to complete the career sweep, wining the individual title in all four years, and won the 100-yard breaststroke for the third time in her career. Out of the pool, Fitzpatrick graduated with a human science degree from the School of Nursing & Health Studies and was a four-time member of the BIG EAST All-Academic Team. She, alongside Madsen, earned the BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete Scholarship this spring.
