WASHINGTON – The No. 22 Georgetown women's soccer team (1-0) will take on Virginia Tech (0-0-1) on Sunday at Thompson Field as the final game of the Virginia Tech Tournament. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. The Hoyas are coming off of a 1-0 win over Georgia on Friday.

In the shutout against Georgia, the Hoyas used a goal in the 14th minute from graduate student Kyra Carusa (San Diego, Calif./Del Norte/Stanford) to get on the board. Carusa was sought out by senior Amanda Carolan (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional), who registered an assist. GU outshot the Bulldogs, 16-6, and were awarded seven penalty kicks while UGA had one. Senior goalkeeper Arielle Schechtman (Del Mar, Calif./La Jolla Country Day/UCLA) took the win managing two saves. The shutout put Schechtman at the top of the leaderboards at Georgetown with most career shutouts.

The Blue & Gray enters the 2018 season ranked No. 22 in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll and are tabbed as the preseason favorite in the BIG EAST Conference. Additionally, Schechtman was selected as Preseason BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year and junior Meaghan Nally (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) was named Preseason BIG EAST Defender of the Year. They were joined by Carolan and senior Caitlin Farrell (Wallingford, Conn./Choate Rosemary Hall) who earned spots on the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Farell was also selected to the Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) Hermann Trophy Watch List, the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year.

The Hokies tied with San Diego, 0-0 in double overtime, on Friday night. The squad is coming off of a 7-6-5 record from last season with a 1-5-4 mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Virginia Tech has rising sophomore Allyson Brown as one of its offensive key returners. Brown finished the 2017 season with three goals and an assist.

The last time the two schools met was on September 13, 2015 when the Hokies defeated the Hoyas, 2-1, at Shaw Field. The all-time series is tied at 3-3-0.

Following Sunday's game, the Blue & Gray will host No. 3 Duke on Thursday, August 23 in its home opener at Shaw Field at 4 p.m. For more information, visit www.GUHoyas.com.
