WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University football team opens a stretch of three-consecutive games against Ivy League opponents when it travels to Dartmouth on Saturday afternoon. Kickoff at Memorial Field in Hanover, New Hampshire is set for 1:30 p.m. A link to live stats and a subscription-based video stream, via ESPN+, is available at GUHoyas.com.
The Hoyas (1-1) are coming off a 13-8 loss in a defensive battle against Campbell last weekend in the team's home opener at Cooper Field.
Wes Bowers (Fort Washington, Md. / Bishop McNamara) had a game-high 18 tackles, and added 3.0 tackles-for-loss (TFL) for 14 yards and one sack.
Gunther Johnson (Anthem, Ariz. / Boulder Creek / Arizona) finished 17-of-34 passing for 201 yards, while
Michael Dereus (Hyde Park, Mass / Williston Northampton) had three catches for 76 yards and
Jackson Saffold (Orlando, Fla. / Timber Creek) led the rushing attack with 49 yards on seven carries.
Bowers and
Brad Hurst (Helen, Ga. / White County) both earned Patriot League Honorable Mention selections on Monday, recognizing their performances against Campbell. Bowers' 18 tackles are tied for the third most ever by a Georgetown player and the most in a game since Matthew Satchell (C'16) had 18 at Bucknell on Oct. 24, 2015. Hurst connected on both of his field goal attempts, connecting on a career-long 45-yard kick as well as a 24-yard boot. Both field goals came within a minute of each other in the second quarter to give the Hoyas a 6-3 lead at halftime. He also had two touchbacks on three kickoffs.
Saturday will be the third meeting all-time between the Hoyas and Big Green, and GU's first trip to New Hampshire. The two teams last played in 2015, with Dartmouth coming away with a 31-10 victory on the Hilltop. The two historic universities first met on the football field in 1916, with Georgetown defeating Dartmouth 10-0 in a neutral contest at a high school in Massachusetts.
The Hoyas are 3-8 against the Ivy League in the last four seasons under Head Coach
Rob Sgarlata. Georgetown will play its next two games also against opponents from the Ivy League. The Blue & Gray will return home to Cooper Field next weekend to host Columbia in the annual meeting for the Lou Little Trophy before traveling to play at Brown on Sept. 29.
Dartmouth will be playing its season opener on Saturday. The Big Green, which was picked to finish sixth in the Ivy League preseason poll, finished 8-2 last season and tied for second in the conference with a 5-2 league record. Dartmouth returns five starters on offense, including including preseason All-American Matt Kaskey on the offensive line and 2016 Ivy League Rookie of the Year Hunter Hagdorn at wide receiver. The defense has six starters back in the fold, led by linebacker Jack Traynor, a unanimous All-Ivy selection last year who is the third-leading returning tackler (9.8 tackles per game) in the country.
Following this weekend's game, the Hoyas will return to Cooper Field for a Homecoming matchup against Columbia. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the game can be watched live on GUHoyas.com via the Patriot League Network. It will be the fourth annual matchup in the Lou Little Trophy series, with Georgetown having won two of the first three editions.
The Homecoming game, as well as GU's Family Weekend contest against Lehigh on Oct. 20, are both currently sold out. Visit WeAreGeorgetown.com/football closer to game day for updates on whether additional tickets will be made available on Saturday at Cooper Field.
