WASHINGTON– The Georgetown University men's tennis team opened the season at the Penn Invitational in Philadelphia this past weekend. The Hoyas faced three opponents in various singles and doubles matches. It was a solid start for the squad, as every member of the team earned a win.
Sophomore
Rohan Kamdar (Singapore / Anglo Chinese School) had a great doubles showing as he won all three of his matches against Yale, Princeton and Penn.
Connor Lee (San Marino, Calif. / San Marino) partnered with Kamdar for two of Kamdar's matches, winning 7-6(5) over Princeton in the tiebreaker and 6-4 over Penn. Freshman
Carlos Grande (Miami, Fla. / Belen Jesuit) earned his first win against Yale, 6-3, with partner
Justin Cheun (Fairfax, Va. / Seoul International School). Junior
Ian Witmer (North Palm Beach, Fla. / The Benjamin School) also won both of his doubles matches. Witmer and partner
Michael Chen (Holmdel, N.J. / Holmdel) beat Yale in the tiebreaker to win 7-6(4).
In singles play, the Hoyas picked up three wins on the first day against Yale, two wins on the second day against Princeton, and two wins on the last day of competition against Penn.
Charlie Sharton (Wayland, Mass. / Wayland) won in two straight sets in his first singles match against Yale, 6-4, 6-2. Sophomore
Luke Ross (Sewickley, Pa. / Sewickley Academy) won both of his matches. He defeated Yale in a come-from-behind win, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
The Hoyas will be back in action Friday, October 5 as they compete in the Morgan State Invitational in Baltimore and the Spider Invitational in Richmond, Virginia. Both are three-day events.
