WASHINGTON – The No. 7 Georgetown women's soccer team shut out DePaul, 3-0, at Cooper Field on a rainy Thursday afternoon, tallying the squad's seventh clean sheet of the season. The Hoyas are on an eight-game winning-streak, their longest streak since the 2005 season. With the win, GU advances to 9-0-2 on the season and 2-0 in the BIG EAST, while the Blue Demons fall to 5-4-2 and 1-1 in the league.
"This was definitely a more difficult game than the score line suggests," said head coach
Dave Nolan. "Playing a tough DePaul team on the confines of a narrow turf field in a monsoon meant the game was always going to be decided in certain moments. What was really gratifying for us was that the set piece we scored in the first few minutes was exactly what we had worked on in practice yesterday. That helped relax us and two excellent finishes in the second half capped off a great result."
The Blue & Gray took advantage of the game within the first three minutes of play when sophomore
Grace Nguyen (Lilburn, Va. / Parkview) took a corner kick from the right side of the field towards junior
Meaghan Nally (Herndon, Va. / South Lakes) in the middle of a crowded six-yard box. Nally blasted the ball in the net, giving the Hoyas a 1-0 lead. This marked Nally's second goal of the season and Nguyen's third assist.
Georgetown found its rhythm immediately after Nally's goal and the Hoya defense dominated the backfield, helping senior goalkeeper
Arielle Schechtman (Del Mar, Calif. / La Jolla Country Day / UCLA) at the net.
The two teams went back and forth with possession of the ball in the beginning of the second half until the 66th minute when Schechtman sought out graduate student
Kyra Carusa (San Diego, Calif. / Del Norte / Stanford) from GU's net as Carusa was running past midfield with a Blue Demons defender on her. The forward took control of the ball as DePaul's goalkeeper Mollie Eriksson stepped out from goal, attempting to stop her from coming past her, but with Schechtman's assist, Carusa found the back of the net and gave the Hoyas a 2-0 advantage. This tallied Carusa's sixth goal on the season and Schechtman's first assist.
The Blue & Gray controlled the rest of the game as the rain picked up on the Hilltop. Senior
Caitlin Farrell (Wallingford, Conn. / Choate Rosemary Hall) scored her eighth goal of the season in the 84th minute, tying with her career-high of eight goals from the 2017 campaign. Senior
Amanda Carolan (Bayville, N.J. / Central Regional) found Farrell from midfield and recognized a clear opportunity for Farrell to score from the right side of the box, registering GU's third and final goal of the game.
"We had some great performances today," said Nolan. "Arielle in goal dealt with everything that DePaul and the weather threw at us. I thought both
Jenna Staudt (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) and
Meaghan Nally in the middle of the backline really did a good job. In midfield,
Sarah Trissel (San Diego, Calif. / Torrey Pines) was exceptional and up front,
Kyra Carusa,
Caitlin Farrell and
Paula Germino-Watnick (Chevy Chase, Md. / Bethesda-Chevy Chase) did what they do and it was great to have
Amanda Carolan back on the field after an injury. We head north to Seton Hall on Sunday now with two Big East wins under our belt."
DePaul outshot Georgetown, 10-7, but the Hoyas had a 6-1 advantage on corner kicks. Schechtman recorded eight saves to Eriksson's two.
The Blue & Gray will return to action on Sunday when the squad travels to South Orange, New Jersey to take on Seton Hall in a BIG EAST matchup. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and live stats and video can be found at www.GUHoyas.com.
