Second Half Goals Lift No. 7 Georgetown Past Seton Hall

Box Score WASHINGTON – The No. 7 Georgetown women's soccer team shut out the Seton Hall Pirates, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field. The victory marks GU's ninth-straight win, the largest winning-streak in program history, as well as the eighth shutout of the season for the Hoyas. With the win, the Blue & Gray advances to 10-0-2 on the season while SHU falls to 3-6-2.

"This was a hard-fought game against a spirited Seton Hall," said head coach Dave Nolan. "They set up to frustrate us defensively with numbers behind the ball. But to be fair, the girls didn't panic and stepped it up in the second half. Once we got the first goal, we went on and finished the game comfortably."

Both squads showed up ready to play with strong defenses on each end. The Hoyas had several opportunities to score in the first half, including a shot in the 30th minute by senior Amanda Carolan (Bayville, N.Y. / Central Regional), who just missed the net and hit the crossbar instead. Junior Meaghan Nally (Herndon, Va. / South Lakes) anchored the Hoya defense, not allowing the Pirates to capitalize on any opportunities to enter the scoring column and only allowing them to take just two shots throughout the game.

The Hoyas found its rhythm as they entered the second half. Junior Sarah Trissel (San Diego, Calif. / Torrey Pines) gave the Hoyas the 1-0 lead in the 51st minute with a shot from behind the box. Her shot bounced into the six-yard box and went over SHU goalkeeper Anna MacLean's head into the back of the net as she stepped out from goal to stop the ball on its first bounce. The goal marked Trissel's first goal this season.

GU improved the score to 2-0 shortly after Trissel's goal. In the 60th minute, sophomore Grace Nguyen (Lilburn, Ga. / Parkview) connected with senior Caitlin Farrell (Wallingford, Conn. / Choate Rosemary Hall) from midfield as Farrell ran down the right side without a defender on her. The senior found herself one-on-one with MacLean and blasted the ball past her, tallying her ninth goal of the season and Nguyen's fourth assist this year.

The Blue & Gray had several other opportunities to score throughout the latter half, including a shot in the 63rd minute by graduate student Kyra Carusa (San Diego, Calif. / Del Norte / Stanford) that hit the crossbar, and a powerful shot by Germino-Watnick in the 74th minute that MacLean registered a save off of.

With just five seconds left to play, sophomore Jenna Menta (Lincolndale, N.Y. / Somers) crossed the ball over to center of the box, finding senior Alyssa Cronin (Green Township, N.J. / Newton), who connected with junior Casey Richards (Allendale, N.J. / Northern Highlands) as she touched the ball into the net, finishing things off for the Hoyas on a good note, 3-0. This marked Richard's first goal and Cronin and Menta's first assists of the season.

Georgetown outshot the Pirates, 21-2, and took four corners to SHU's one. MacLean tallied seven goals as GU senior goalkeeper Arielle Schechtman (Del Mar, Calif. / La Jolla Country Day / UCLA) had just one save. The victory tallied Schechtman's 39th career shutout.

Up next, the Blue & Gray will stay on the road and visit Creighton on Thursday, Oct. 4 in Omaha, Nebraska. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and live stats and video will be available at www.GUHoyas.com.
