White and Salisbury Highlight Nittany Lion Challenge

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University track & field teams resumed their indoor track & field season in University Park, Pennsylvania for the Nittany Lion Challenge on Saturday, hosted by Penn State at the Multi-Sport Facility & Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track. The day was highlighted by a pair of event titles and several finishes among the top three.

Men's Recap
The first track event of the day was the Mile and the Blue & Gray made a statement early as sophomores Jack Van Scoter (Pasadena, Calif. / Flintridge Prep) and Matthew Bouthillette (North Providence, R.I. / La Salle Academy) both finished in the top three with times of 4:07.98 and 4:08.09, respectively. Shortly thereafter, four Hoyas finished in the top ten of the 600-meter race with Ruach Padhal (London, Ontario / John Paul II Catholic) leading the way with a third-place finish, followed by Brennan Munley (Clarkson, Mich. / Waterford Mott) in fifth, Ian Delgado (Cary, N.C. / Green Hope) in sixth and Lawrence Leake (Huntington, N.Y. / Huntington) finishing in eighth. The foursome was separated by only two seconds of each other.

What highlighted the day was a pair of impressive performances by All-American Joe White (Clifton, N.J. / DePaul Catholic) and junior Jack Salisbury (Rumford, R.I. / La Salle Academy) in the 1,000-meter run and the 3,000-meter event, respectively. White posted a time of 2:21.99 to take the win by a hair while Salisbury closed strong in the last 200 meters to finish first by just .01 seconds with a time of 8:13.38. Also posting a top-three finish was junior Quincey Wilson (Lithonia, Ga. / Arabia Mountain) as he finished second with a time of 48.69 in the 400-meter event.

"Jack Van Scoter and Matt got us started out with great performances in the mile with Jack running just shy of a personal best and Matt running a personal best of his own by four seconds, finishing as the first two collegians," Director of Track & Field Julie Culley said. Joe is in great shape right now and we were thrilled to see him get a win today as he builds back after having missed the 2017-2018 season. We'll be back to Penn State in two weeks where he will open up in his primary event, the 800-meter run, to get his 2019 season truly underway. Jack Salisbury moved up in distance and won a really impressive first ever 3000-meter race in a very respectable time. He's worked hard to get stronger year over year and it showed today."

Women's Recap
On the women's side, the Hoyas posted strong showings in several events. In the Mile, Meg Mathison (Middleton, Wis. / Waunakee) made the most of her indoor season debut by posting a fourth-place finish with a time of 4:56.83. Sophomore Paige Hofstad (New Braunfels, Texas / New Braunfels) and graduate student Josette Norris (Tenafly, N.J. / Tenafly) also made their indoor season debuts and were able to finish in the top three in the 3,000-meter run. Hofstad completed her second-place finish with a time of 9:39.54 while Norris finished third at 9:40.80. Freshman Sami Corman (Bellevue, Wash. / Issaquah) was in the mix, as well, and posted a sixth-place finish with a time of 9:46.98. Highlighting the field events was freshman Eni Akinniyi (Denton, Texas / John H. Guyer) as she finished in seventh place in the Triple Jump.

"Paige and Josette came into the afternoon tired from training and ran a solid 3K opener demonstrating great strength finishing second and third, respectively," Culley continued. We are preparing for them to run the 5K in a few weeks and today was a good indicator of their fitness. In Meg's first track race for Georgetown, she ran a smart, tactical race finishing fourth in the mile, running just a second slower than her lifetime personal best. She's transitioned nicely and should have a great outing in the 3K next month. We had some other nice performances from the women with Malika making the final of the hurdles and finishing seventh and Kennedy and Rachel finishing sixth and seventh in the 1,000-meter race.  It was a solid day overall for the women."

The Blue & Gray return to the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track on Friday, Jan. 25 for the Penn State National Invitational, held at Penn State University.
